I purchased Fodors Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI guide to assist in my plans. So far, I have found this book to be a valuable resource. It is arranged first by province, then by towns/sites within each area. For example, in the Nova Scotia section, there is basic opening information about the province (its history, culture, climate, etc), then there is a large section just for Halifax. Within that listing, you find numerous places for site seeing, place to eat, to lodge, to shop. One aspect of the book I especially like is called "Off the beaten path", where you can find unusual places worth visiting. The guide is print-only, with maps, so the only thing that could make it better would be a few photographs. I would recommend this book for anyone planning a visit to the Maritimes this year.

The Planning Act, 1996, requires the County Council to acknowledge the provincial interest in "the conservation of features of significant architectural, cultural, historical, archeological or scientific interest". The natural heritage of the Sandbanks, the limestone cliffs, the bays and lake vistas and the abundance of wildlife, especially birds and their respective habitat, is varied yet richly concentrated within the relatively small confines of this island community. In 1996, Statistics Canada identified 1,525 Islanders as visible minorities. Between 1993 and 1997, 638 immigrants came to Prince Edward Island, including refugees and sponsored immigrants. There were 961 Aboriginal persons living in Prince Edward Island in 1997. Five hundred and thirty-two of these lived on Lennox Island and Abegweit Mi'kmaq band reserves while 429 lived off-reserve. Aboriginal persons make up the largest visible minority group in Prince Edward Island. In Prince Edward Island, ministers are appointed to various departments from the elected members of the Legislature. The Minister of Community Affairs and Attorney General is responsible for the Human Rights Act . Under this Act, the Human Rights Commission is established and its mandate is to protect human rights in the province. Amendments to the Act were introduced in 1997. The amendments provided a clear definition of who may file a complaint with the Commission. This definition includes anyone, except the Commission or its employees, who believes on reasonable grounds that the Act has been contravened. The Executive Director has expanded powers of investigation and resolution under sections 22 through 24, and there exists a mechanism whereby the Executive Director's decision can be appealed to the Chairperson of the Commission. Under the amendments, the Chairperson is able to convene a hearing before a panel to inquire into the complaint. Such a hearing will be held in public. These amendments were designed to improve the speed and quality of service and to make the Commission more accessible.
