Prince Edward Island
A Brief History of Prince Edward Island Prince Edward Island is a tiny, crescent shaped island, measuring 224 kilometers from tip to tip. It's gently rolling land runs between sea level to it's highest elevation of 450 feet. Summer day time temperatures range from 20 to 32 degrees C. (70 to 90 degrees F) Low humidity and a cool breeze makes perfect shirt sleeve weather. Winter temperatures range from -3 to -11 degrees C. (26 to 11 degrees F) Perfect conditions for a variety of winter sports. The Provincial Motto is: Parva Sub Ingenti (The small under the protection of the great). Canada's smallest province has a rich and wonderful history that has molded the culture we share today. The Mi'kmaq were the first people to inhabit Prince Edward Island. They were a peaceful tribe, belonging to the Algonkian group. Not having permanent villages, they camped and fished along the shores during the summer. In the winter, they retreated into the forest where there was shelter, and hunted animals for food and clothing. The Mi'kmaq first called the Island Minegoo , and later changed the name to Abegweit , meaning "cradled on the waves." According to Mi'kmaq legend, Glooscap (the Indian God) wanted a cheerful place to go for his holidays, so he painted the rocks and earth of Abegweit a bright and cheerful red and set it among the brilliant blue waves of the Northumberland Strait.

Charlottetown: Institute of Island Studies 1991. Pp. xviii, 116, illus. $9.95
Reviewed by GEORGE ELLIOTT CLARKE Queen's University
While the history of blacks in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick is generally known, that of the slave-founded community of Prince Edward Island has remained largely a mystery. Fortunately, Black Islanders: Prince Edward Island's Historical Black Community, a slim yet panoramic history by Jim Hornby, should increase knowledge of `African-Islanders,' to use Hornby's term, and, especially, of racism's three faces of structural ideology, social discrimination, and personal prejudice. Indeed, the most poignant aspect of the history of the African-Islanders is their near disappearance from the island because of, Hornby writes, `a combination of out-migration and assimilation.' In essence, then, this text chronicles the rise and fall or, more precisely, the flourishing and withering of the original, African-descended islanders.
Hornby's ability to resurrect the dry bones of the African-Islanders is hampered, as he notes, by the loss of their own records. Hence, he is forced to rely upon public papers which, given their origin in a racist society, often portray blacks as criminals and clowns. Hornby recognizes that `the African-Islanders are, of necessity, seen against the background of their relationships with the larger white community.' He also points out that `official documents do not take note of acts of kindness, endurance, and love by the Island's blacks.' Hornby nicely foregrounds his awareness of the skewing effect of racist notions on the social construction of blackness in general and of African-Islanders in particular. He observes the presence of racism in island place names and folklore, and insists that white supremacy - a belief `inherited from colonialism and capitalism' - is a stratifying social force.

VACATION RENTAL SUMMARY: Wyndham House
Wyndham House has occupied a place of honor in the town of Tryon for over 130 years. Built in 1870, it served as home for the ministers of the United Methodist Church which still stands nearby and is now a National Historic Site. After years of restoration and refurbisment, it is now our summer home in Prince Edward Island. Situated near the ocean, Wyndham House is surrounded by trees in its own park-like setting. It overlooks the Tryon River, which flows to the sea five minutes away. The location is reminiscent of Lucy Maud Mongomery's classic "Anne of Green Gables". The house and river, as seen from the nearby hills, is one of the most picturesque views on Prince Edward Island.
