Prince Edward Island's history is relatively young compared to other areas of Canada as well as the United States, its neighbor to the south. The first permanent settlement was founded by the French in 1720. The French remained in control of the settlement on the Island of St. John until 1758 when the Acadians were deported by the British. For the next five years, the first British settlers were the 200 men garrisoned on the island. In 1763 the island was annexed to Nova Scotia. It was not until 1799 that the name would be changed from the Island of St. John to Prince Edward Island. And in that interim time, much would take place. And it was not until 1873 that the island became of a province of Canada. Understanding the history of an area, such as Prince Edward Island, can be essential to successful research.

Prince Edward Island
On July 1, 1873, Prince Edward Island entered Confederation. Up till that time the Government of the island colony had maintained nine lighthouses with salaried light keepers and eight minor lights maintained under individual contract. An agent was appointed in the usual way, although, in their annual report for 1873, the Department dryly notes that: "this appointment was cancelled on the formation of the new Government", and that: "it is probable, with the small amount of business which this Department will have in Prince Edward Island, that it may not be considered necessary to have an officer appointed specially for the purpose of attending to it, as there will be very little for him to attend to". O tempora, o mores. But however lightly the Dominion Government might view the duties of their marine agent, an urgent problem in marine transportation, which had worried the Islanders for many years, now called for a solution. Alone among the Atlantic Provinces, communication with Prince Edward Island was virtually impossible in the depths of winter. In the days of the early steamers, it will be remembered that the Royal William had been put on the Quebec-Halifax run about 1830, and that Francois Baby had operated ships between the Province of Canada and the New Brunswick coast in the years preceding Confederation.

Prince Edward Island
Capital City:
Charlottetown
Canadian history is alive and celebrated in Charlottetown. The 1864 Charlottetown Conference was the first meeting that eventually led to the proclamation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Because of this meeting, the City of Charlottetown is now known as the "Birthplace of Confederation". PEI is just 280 kilometres long so it's quite possible to explore every nook and cranny. Rich soil and a temperate climate make Prince Edward Island an ideal place for mixed farming.
Half of its land is under cultivation, earning it the nickname, "the Garden Province". It is renowned for its red soil, sand dunes and 800 kilometres of beaches.
In 1991, the population of Prince Edward Island was 130,000. Charlottetown, with a population of 33,000, is the Island's only urban centre. Prince Edward Island's population is quite young - about 38 per cent of the people are under 25.
On May 31, 1997, Prince Edward Island celebrated the official opening of the Confederation Bridge. The 12.9-kilometre bridge spans the Northumberland Strait and offers easy access from the mainland to the Island beyond ferries and air travel.

How it all began... The first car appeared on the island in 1905, and raised such a ruckus that a law was passed in 1908 outlawing the operation of any motor vehicle. Automobiles were strictly illegal on PEI until 1913! At that point, owners paid a $5 registration fee and the markers were provided by the owner. The marker carried the registration number and "PEI". The example shown here, #11, was registered to a McLaughlin Touring that was driven across Canada by George A. B. MacDonald - a remarkable feat in those days! It is not clear when the province started issuing the license plates; actual examples point to around 1915-16 as shown at left. But with so few examples surviving in the absence of any provincial records we probably will never know for sure. Plates were not dated until 1923, and up until that point, were made of various materials and color coded to the year, much like Quebec. Needless to say, because of the small population, registration figures remained much lower than any other province save for Newfoundland (which didn't become a province until 1949). Early PEI plates are very hard to find today.
