PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND DATA PAGES IRISH-BORN in PEI before 1846 INDEX and NOTES ABOUT THE PEI IRISH DATA BASE PROJECT It started innocently enough - and we all know where the road that's paved with "good intentions" eventually leads... A few years back, I got to thinking (always dangerous, that!) - why doesn't someone gather together ALL the information about the people who were born in Ireland, but were on The Island by 1845? It didn't appear to be an impossible job, perhaps a bit "time-consuming", but certainly "do-able". So, I hopped on the above-mentioned "road", and started going through my own reference books, and through the PEI microfilms on Indefinate Loan at our Family History Center. I grabbed the folks who fit my "specs", and popped 'em into a data base. ONE THOUSAND names later, and the database is STILL nowhere near "complete"; this project has turned out to be SISYPHEAN, to say the least! Still, there might be some bit of information contained therein that might help another PEI researcher locate his/her ancestors. So, I decided to upload the whole thing to my RootsWeb site. I realize that the documentation leaves a LOT to be desired. With that in mind, I request that you READ and REMEMBER ...

Tracing Your Family History on Prince Edward Island Have you ever wondered where your ancestors came from? Do you know when, why and how they came to Prince Edward Island? Are you interested in learning about your family history but do not know where to start? Start with yourself and work back The best place to begin to trace your family history is with YOURSELF. And from there you can begin to work back generation by generation, from the known to the unknown, to your immigrant ancestors. This means that you should do some genealogical homework before you visit Prince Edward Island record repositories. Only then will you be able to make effective use of their resources. Do your homework first Your first task is to establish the NDP s in your family; that is names of people and their relationships to each other, dates of events such as births, marriages and deaths, and the places where these events occurred. To organize this information, you need to create a pedigree chart which has spaces to show the lines of descent from your eight great great grandparents down to you. Then establish family relations for yourself, for your parents, your grandparents and other forbears. You also may wish to do one for each of your siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. Print what you know to be correct in pen, but what you are uncertain of print in pencil so that changes can easily be made. Now, from looking at your charts, you will be able to assess what you know and what you will need to find out. To avoid confusion, work on only one line at a time.

Prince Edward Island
One of the four Atlantic Provinces, Prince Edward Island is Canada's smallest province in both area and population. With a length of 224 kilometres and width that ranges from 6 to 64 kilometres for a total area 5,660 square kilometres, the island lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, separated from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick by the Northumberland Strait. Prince Edward Island was originally called "Abegweit" by the Micmac Indians, who lived there for some 2,000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. It was discovered by Jacques Cartier in 1534, who described it as "the most beautiful stretch of land imaginable." It was a long time before Prince Edward Island was settled. No permanent colony existed until the French established one in 1719. The British later controlled the island and renamed it in honour of Prince Edward of England. Prince Edward Island is known as the cradle of Confederation, since its capital city of Charlottetown, was the site of the 1864 conference that set Canadian Confederation in motion. Nonetheless, the island did not join the Dominion of Canada until 1873.

History Program History has been defined as the "memory of human group experience" because it brings the student into contact with the whole range of human effort and achievement. Its object is to recreate the past from the evidence left to us, and to try to explain how and why human beings spoke, acted, and thought as they did in the past. Although history must always deal with the "facts" of societies, it is even more concerned with explaining and illuminating them. The program is centred broadly on the history of "Atlantic Civilization" the historical development of Europe and the Americas. The courses aim to provide both a broad exposure to the history of the Atlantic World, and more specialized work in the history of various regions and countries.
