Prince Edward Island, usually referred to simply as PEI, is the smallest Canadian province. Its 2184 sq. miles (5525 sq. km) make it even smaller than some of Canada's National Parks, but it also means that the province can be toured within about five days. The island, vaguely in the shape of a crescent, lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. It is separated from the northern coasts of the Maritime Provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia by the narrow Northumberland Strait. Two ferries cross the Strait year round: from the port of Cape Tormentine in New Brunswick and from Caribou in Nova Scotia to Wood Islands, PEI.
PEI is a well-known haven of peace and tranquility for those seeking a place to truly "get away from it all." The islanders are warm, hospitable and very relaxed. Nature too seems to possess this tranquil quality, with expansive rolling hills where rich green and reddish farmland offer a harmonious patchwork of color. Dotting this mellifluous landscape are little villages where the pace of life has remained oblivious of the internal combustion engine and the microchip. In the recondite ports along the capricious coastline one might still find some old salts who, plied with the right lubrication, can spin a yarn longer than the Canadian border.
From Cradle to Cradle
The island's early inhabitants were the Micmac Indians, who welcomed its fertile soil and the abundance of fish in the surrounding and inland waters. They called this new home abegweit, meaning "land cradled by waters," and they lived here relatively undisturbed until the 16th century. In 1534 the French explorer Jacques Cartier first set foot on the island, but it took a while though before French settlers began arriving, their ranks swollen by Acadians from Nova Scotia, who had been expelled by the British in 1755.

IGI Batch Numbers for Prince Edward Island, Canada
Click on the batch number of interest and enter the surname you are searching for to be taken to the relevant search results at familysearch.org Some towns/counties are listed in the IGI under more than one state/province. Where batch numbers for a town/county with the same name have been found in a different state/province as well as this one, that state/province appears in the "Other States/Provinces" column as a clickable link (or more than one if appropriate). Clicking this link will take you to the relevant entry on that state/province's page (which may be either for the same town or for another town elsewhere with the same name). If you see a beside a batch number, this batch either covers more than one location or includes entries with different names/spellings for what may be the same Town, Parish, Church or Chapel. Common such discrepancies are to find both St. and Saint or to have both hyphenated and unhyphenated versions of the same name. Sometimes the same town will be listed with a different county even in the same batch. It should be remembered that much of the indexing performed by the LDS was done by people (who were all volunteers, I believe) who were not familiar with the local geography. Clicking on the will display a list of alternative locations for that batch.

Prince Edward Island has the distinction of being the smallest political unit in one of the world’s largest countries, Canada. "The Island," as it is known affectionately by its inhabitants, is situated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the Atlantic coast of North America. At 46° North latitude, it is about half-way between the Equator and the North Pole. Despite its location some 15km from the nearest point on the adjacent mainland, Prince Edward Island will soon be connected by "the Fixed Link," a bridge, due to open in 1997, a prospect welcomed by half of the inhabitants and viewed with misgivings by the rest. In the meantime, there is a year-round ferry service, as well as excellent air links through the modern airport at Charlottetown. GEOGRAPHY
First-time visitors to Prince Edward Island are often struck by the vivid red of the soil and the beauty of the gently rolling landscape, much of it under cultivation in potatoes and grain. Because of this rather intense agricultural activity, the island has come to be called the ‘Garden of the Gulf’.

When Jacques Cartier came ashore in 1534, Indians had lived on Abegweit, meaning "cradled on the waves," for 10,000 years. Surprisingly warm waves wash beaches, and the island's population increases fivefold in summer. Visitors enjoy Victorian villages, tidy farmsteads, and lobster suppers in steepled churches. Manicured Charlottetown, site of the 1864 meeting that led to Canada's union, draws thousands to its annual arts festival.
In May 1997, the Confederation Bridge, an eight-mile span between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, was completed. This longest bridge over ice-covered waters in the world brings a new age of transportation to Atlantic Canada. Bounty from the sea includes shellfish and Irish moss, a source of carrageenan, a food stabilizer. Text source: National Geographic Atlas of the World, Seventh Edition
