Research Objectives: As in main parts of West Africa, in Guinea Bissau wild animals in general and mammals in special have been suffering increasing pressure due to habitat loss as a consequence of logging and agricultural activities and to overexploitation through increasing commercial hunting. The last nation-wide mammal survey was carried out fourteen years ago. This lack of reliable data on primates and other mammals makes it difficult to design and implement effective wildlife conservation actions. This study aims to assess the current conservation status and the use patterns of primates and other wild mammals in the coastal region of Guinea Bissau and to analyse the possibilities and constraints to the implementation of community-based wildlife monitoring and management in that country.

Lemurs
Quick Facts
Lemurs are a special group of primates found only on Madagascar and the Comoro Islands. There are 50 species of lemurs and 17 are on the endangered species list. Lemurs are prosimians , or primative primates. They are social animals with long limbs, flexible toes and fingers, and long noses. Habitat loss is the main threat to lemurs today, as people clear their native forests for farm land.

E-mail Jonah Ratsimbazafy with your questions about lemurs.
"Lemurs" by Lezle Williams Physical Description: The lemur is a kind of primate, which means it is related to apes and humans. You would never know it from the way it looks though! There are many kinds of lemurs, but most have long, pointy noses, which contribute to their excellent sense of smell. Each type of lemur looks very different. They vary color from reddish brown to gray, and come in all different sizes, too. The smallest lemur, the pygmy mouse lemur, weighs only one ounce. But the biggest lemurs, the Indri and Diademed Sifaka lemurs, can weigh up o fifteen pounds, which is about as much as a big cat. Communication: Lemurs use their sense of smell to communicate with each other. These primates have scent glands on their bottoms and on their feet that leave odors on surfaces they cross. When other lemurs pass by, they smell those odors and can tell that another lemur has been there. Lemurs have big, bushy tails that they wave in the air as another form of communication. These big tails also help lemurs balance when they leap from tree to tree.

While conservationists bemoan the loss of Brazil's Amazon rain forest, that country's Atlantic coastal forest is actually in far worse shape. Five hundred years after European settlement, the few remaining scraps of forest house one of the most endangered animals on earth, the golden lion tamarin. This 1.5 pound primate has golden fur, a lion-like face, and an impressive mane. But with nearly all of its native forests converted to city or pasture, the wild population has shrunken to about 500. In the 1960s, as this tamarin grew scarce, Brazilian primatologist Adelmar Coimbra-Filho set out to prevent their extinction. In the ensuing years, an international collaboration has worked to restore habitat, educate locals about the tamarin's rarity, and raise golden lion tamarins in captivity for release into the wild. The goal is to raise the wild population to 2,000 the estimated minimum needed to minimize the hazards of inbreeding, disease and chance extinction. While the species could increase on its own, introducing captive animals will boost the animals' genetic diversity, helping prevent disease and inbreeding.

POSTED 2 OCT 1998. On Sept. 10, Keiko, the killer whale star of the movie Free Willy, was flown to a bay in Iceland where he lived for two years before he was netted in 1979. It was the logical sequel to a movie that climaxed with the liberation of a doe-eyed killer whale. Jessie, Willy's wise-cracking, street-urchin-turned-animal-trainer, would be proud to see his friend Keiko, a five-ton killer whale, getting a real chance at life in the boundless ocean. (OK, Keiko's really a dolphin, but for some reason everybody calls his species "killer whales" or orcas.) But as Keiko awaits an eventual release from his new pen in the chilly North Atlantic, there are a lot of questions to be answered. Will Keiko survive and thrive in his new home? Will he integrate with the all-important family unit? More broadly, what must animals whether dolphins, whooping cranes or endangered primates know before they are moved from captivity to freedom? All in the genes?

Protecting the Health of Wild Primates
ASP Policy Statement of Protection of Primate Health in the Wild
WHEREAS many of our primate subjects are already being negatively impacted by human activities that result in destruction of their habitat and fragmentation of their populations; and WHEREAS the study of primates often involves the close proximity of the subjects, the research workers and their guides; and WHEREAS very little information is available on the presence of or exposure to infectious disease in wild primate populations; and WHEREAS evidence suggests that many primate species are susceptible to many of the pathogenic infections that afflict humans and that the transmission of infection can occur in both directions; The AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PRIMATOLOGISTS therefore RECOMMENDS:
  • THAT field research workers consult with veterinary and medical experts to develop health and sanitation standards specific to the research site.
    THAT field researchers observe these prescribed health and sanitation standards throughout their research and that these standards be considered in all research proposals;
    THAT the health and sanitation standards apply equally to local staff and volunteers employed by the research worker and that the observance of these standards is an ethical obligation;

http://www.buav.org/pri/pri.htm
The BUAV has undertaken one of its most dangerous investigations to date, into the international trade in wild caught baboons for research. BUAV investigators travelled to Tanzania to infiltrate the primate supply network. We uncovered evidence of wild baboons being kept in shocking conditions prior to their export to laboratories around the world. Our unique footage has revealed the appalling treatment inflicted on these highly sensitive and sociable animals. Sold for as little as $12 each (£8) by the trappers, these primates are then sold on to the international research industry for up to $1200 per baboon (approximately £800). Tanzania is East Africa's largest country. It has rich and varied ecosystems and is a country of great natural wealth and spectacular beauty. Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, is amongst Tanzania's most popular attractions. It is also well-known for its extensive flora and fauna and is home to more than 4 million wild animals, including many non-human primates, over 60,000 insect species, more than 1000 bird species and a host of plant species. It is thus a popular destination for tourists who are playing an increasingly important role in the Tanzanian economy. Prior to our investigation, little was known as to the exact location of the baboon dealers' trapping sites and holding stations in Tanzania. Thus on arrival in the country, the BUAV investigators had to carry out detective work during which they met with suspicion and on occasions hostility, often finding themselves in potentially dangerous situations. Their perseverance, however, paid off and soon they were able to start unravelling the secret world of the Tanzanian primate dealers.

Tamarins information There are many species of Tamarin and several sub-species of these. Many of these classifications are disputed for one reason or another so please get in touch if you believe that this page contains any errors. Email atoz@monkeymania.co.uk with details. Tamarins (general) Tamarins are distinguished by their striking colourations which camouflage them in the wild. Tamarins are small, compared to most other primates, having a body length averaging around 25cm (10 inches) and they weigh around 15-20 ounces. Lion tamarins tend to be a the largest of the group, and are distinguished by their elongated digits and the manes from which they derive their name. The tamarins' ancestral primate nails have evolved to look like claws on all but their large toes. This enables them to climb up and down tree trunks like squirrels. The tamarin is distinguished from the marmoset, by the lower jaw and teeth. Tamarins have rounded jaws, whilst the jaws of marmosets are V-shaped, with enlarged incisors.
