Cheating
Week of October 29, 2003 Listen to this program now
In this hour, we explore Cheating . Four out of five high school students say they've cheated. More than half of medical school students say the same thing. Even The New York Times has cribbed from somebody else's paper. Is everybody doing it? Guests include Dr. Howard Gardner , professor in Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and co-director of a large-scale research study called the GoodWork Project; renowned primate researcher Dr. Frans de Waal , professor of psychology at Emory University; Dr. Helen Fisher , research professor in the department of anthropology at Rutgers University and author of Anatomy of Love: A Natural History of Mating, Marriage, and Why We Stray ; and country music group , who perform the Hank Williams classic, "Your Cheatin' Heart."

The First Primates
P rimates are remarkably recent animals. Most species of living things had become extinct long before the first monkeys and their prosimian ancestors evolved. While the Earth is about 4.55 billion years old and the first life dates to at least 3.5 billion years ago, the first primates did not appear until around 60 million years ago. That was after the dinosaurs had become extinct.
65,000,000 years ago present T ransitional primate-like creatures were evolving by the end of the Mesozoic Era (ca. 65 million years ago). At that time, the world was very different from today. The continents were in other locations and they had somewhat different shapes. North America was still connected to Europe but not to South America. India was not yet part of Asia but heading towards it. Australia was close to Antarctica. Most land masses had warm tropical or subtropical climates.
Small Insectivore from the
end of the Mesozoic Era T he flora and fauna at the end of the Mesozoic Era would have seemed alien since most of the plants and animals that are familiar to us had not yet evolved. Large reptiles were beginning to be replaced by mammals as the dominant large land animals. Among the mammals, there were a few archaic egg-layers (

PRIMATES IN GENERAL
What makes an animal a primate? Primates are built much like other tree-dwelling mammals such as squirrels, shrews and possums. They have long flexible backbones, five-fingered gripping hands and feet and forward pointing eyes on a short, flexible neck. Their forearms are linked to the chest by a collar bone (clavicle) which allows them to hang without straining their shoulder muscles. Like many other tree dwelling mammals, most primates have long tails to help them balance, and some also have prehensile tails (see below).
Primates, however, are much better than other tree-dwellers at manipulating objections. Primates have hands that grasp and not paws, often with an opposable thumb (pollex) or big toe (hallux): these can press against the other digits. Primate have a well-developed sense of touch with many sense organs on the tips of fingers and toes. Except for marmosets and tamarins, all primates have flat fingernails and toenails instead of claws.
