Do you know why George Washington is never smiling in portraits? (Would you smile if your false teeth were made out of cow's tooth, hippopotamus ivory, metal, and springs?) Did you know that President Ulysses S. Grant once received a speeding ticket while driving his team of horses in Washington, D.C.? Kathryn Prellwitz's fifth-grade students at South Beaver Dam Elementary School (Beaver Dam, Wisconsin) know those facts and many more about the U.S. Presidents. In fact, those kids have used their vast presidential knowledge to create a wonderful Internet resource! The Cherry Tree (President’s Day)
Lesson plans, a materials list, lesson steps, assessment and extension activities are presented.

Holidays President's Day Definition: The observance of Presidents' Day in the United States is reminiscent of the Indian fable of the blind men and the elephant in the sense that the holiday seems to mean something different to everybody. Depending on your perspective or what part of the country you're from, Presidents' Day is intended to honor George Washington, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, or all the American presidents. A federal law passed in 1968, effective in 1971, and adopted by individual states, declaring one single federal public holiday Presidents' Day to be observed on the 3rd Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the United States. P r e s i d e n t s D a y What is President's Day? The original version of President's Dat was actually in 1796, on George Washington's Birthday during his last full year of presidency. Washington was born on February 22,1732 according to the calendar thathas been used since about the mid-18th century. However, Washington was actually born on February 11. Many Americans in 1796 celebrated his birthday on the 22nd, while others celebrated it on the 11th. By the early 19th century, Washington's Birthday had taken a firm root in the American society as a national holiday. The traditions tied to his birthday included Birthnight Balls in various regions, speeches and receptions given by different public figures and also a lot of celebration in the taverns throughout the land. Abraham Lincoln was also a February baby. He was born on the 12th of the month of February. The first acknowledgement of his birthday took place in 1865, the year of his assassination, when both houses of Congress gathered for a memorial address. Although Lincoln's Birthday did not become a federal holiday like George Washington's Birthday, it did however become a legal holiday in several states. In 1968, legislation was enacted that affected several federal holidays. One of these being Washington's Birthday. The holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February each year whether or not it fell on the 22nd. This act, which took effect in 1971, was designed to help simplify the yearly calendar of holidays, and also to give federal employees some standard three-day weekends in the process.

    History:
A cornucopia, also called a horn of plenty, is a symbol of abundance taken from an ancient legend. Thousands of years ago, the people of Greece believed that their god, Zeus, was reared by a beautiful maiden. As the story goes, she fed the infant Zeus an endless supply of goat's milk from a cornucopia, or goat's horn. As centuries passed, most people forgot this ancient legend, but the cornucopia remained a symbol of an endless supply of food or drink. As the history of the United States unfolded, the cornucopia became a symbol for Thanksgiving, the day set aside in thanks for abundance.
