Presidents Day (also called Washington's Birthday) is celebrated in the USA on the third Monday of February. It is a Federal holiday in the USA. George Washington's birthday was originally designated a national holiday in 1885, but its date was changed by Congress in 1971. These crafts projects are for preschool, kindergarten and elementary school children. The crafts use materials found around the house, like egg cartons, cardboard, paper, boxes, string, crayons, paint, glue, etc. See a page about color mixing to see how to combine paint to make all the colors of the r a i n b o w Click on any of the crafts to go to the instructions. • Clean and dry milk cartons from school lunchroom. Staple top back together to form a peak for your cabin. Next cover all four sides with light brown construction paper using white school glue. Cut out two triangles to cover areas inset in the roof. Cut out a door and draw a square on another side. Glue small stick pretzels on all four sides. Glue a shiny penny with Lincoln facing out in the window square. Leave cut out door open. Don't cut door completely out. Measure to cut out a rectangle for the roof. You may glue it or staple the roof on and even add a chimney if you like.
    • Gather many sticks from outside and let the children glue them onto paper to make log cabins. The kids can get very creative with this. They can add saran wrap for windows or any other decorations.
    • Cherry Trees - Glue twigs on sheets of white construction paper to make trees. Let children attach small red circle sticker "cherries" or use finger prints dipped into red finger paints.

    Father's Day Card
Give each child a 9" paper plate. Cut out two small triangeles from paper plate to make the tail section. See illustration. Reproduce the fish pattern . (Pattern will open up into a new window.) Cut out, trace onto oaktag, and cut out again. (Use this as your main pattern) Have each child trace the oaktag pattern onto white construction paper and cut out. Then glue the fish onto the paper plate, as shown. Then glue seashell for the eye. On the card, write, "To Dad (or Grandpa, etc.), You're a great catch!" Apply glue all around edges of fish and onto tail. Sprinkle sand on the glue while still wet. Shake off excess sand. Have each child tie a piece of yarn about 14" long (fishing line) to a stick (1' long- fishing pole) and attach a paper clip to the other end of the yarn. With a hole puncher, children will make a hole where indicated on the fish and hook the paper clip through it.
    **NEW** NUTS AND BOLTS PAPERWEIGHT
In a large mixing bowl, mix together plaster of Paris and water (two parts plaster to one part water). Stir until the mixture is smooth. Give the students a handful of plaster and let them mold the plaster into a mound, about 3" in diameter. Decorate by pressing with a variety of nuts, bolts, nails, and screws into the surfaces. Set the paperweights on old newspapers to dry for two or three days. Spray paint them silver after they dry. Trace paperweight onto a piece of felt and cut out. Trim edges and glue to bottom of paperweight for protective covering for bottom.
