No, actually, this site sticks to non-fictional American presidents, and the list of their various ailments makes you wonder how anybody survives the hardest job in the country. Much of the information here surprised us (for instance, we can't believe we missed President Clinton's hearing aids, and what's with all those instances of Graves' disease in the Bush family?), though some was just nasty (Harding and mumps orchitis ewww that guy had.

The Martin Luther King We Remember

By Adam Wolfson and Daniel Patrick Moynihan Forty years ago this summer, Martin Luther King, Jr., stood at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered his "I Have a Dream" oration. But despite the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the passage of time, King's significance remains a point of contention. Do people really know what they are celebrating on the third Monday of every January? Though the search for the "real," flesh-and-blood King is well-intentioned and has added immensely to the knowledge of King and his times, it has also paradoxically obscured the King who mattered to Americans. In the recounting of his marital infidelities, acts of plagiarism, and ties to (former) members of the American Communist Party, people have lost sight of why he was lionized in his own day and is still remembered for his political achievements and rhetorical gifts.

Women in America American Lifestyles Americans and the Environment Teachers - Created by the National Humanities Center, this collection of scholarly essays on Americans' relationship with the environment may be over the heads of most students. BUT teachers will find the subject matter fits nicely with most American History curricula, and the "guiding discussion" sections provide some new strategies and insights for teaching material that may have become too routine for students and teachers alike. If history (at any level) is your field, this one is worth a visit. A Biography of America Grades 6-12 - This American History survey site from the Annenberg Project was created as a companion to the video series of the same name. The chief resource avialable is a collection of transcripts of the programs. There are also timelines, discussion questions, and far fewer images than one would imagine in such a project. This could be a resource for discussion ideas on American history topics or an introductory survey for a student searching for an independent study project. Democracy in America Grades 9-12 This site is devoted to the work of Alexis DeToqueville, whose extensive accounts of American life and character in the 1840's remains a staple for the study of American history. National African American History Month, 2003
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation

frican Americans have played central roles in some of the most triumphant and courageous moments in our Nation's history. During National African American History Month, we honor the rich heritage of African Americans and pay tribute to their many contributions to our Nation. As we celebrate this year's theme, "The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections," we remember the successes and challenges of our past. We also resolve to honor the achievements and legacy of these proud citizens by continuing to improve our society so that it fully lives up to our founding ideals.
In 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson recognized the need for our country to gain a more complete and informed understanding of our past. He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and established the first Negro History Week to emphasize that "We have a wonderful history behind us . . . " Through the pioneering efforts of Dr. Woodson and the hard work of the Association, this observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.
For generations, African Americans have strengthened our Nation by urging reforms, overcoming obstacles, and breaking down barriers. We see the greatness of America in those who have risen above injustice and enriched our society, a greatness reflected in the resolve of Jackie Robinson, the intellect of W.E.B. DuBois, and the talent of Louis Armstrong. We also gain a deeper appreciation for the AfricanAmerican experience in the writings of James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, and Zora Neal Hurston, as well as in the music of Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and countless others.
