National African American History Month, 2002
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation During these extraordinary times, America looks forward to new challenges and opportunities with a reinvigorated sense of unity and common purpose. We are a strong and vibrant Nation, thanks to the creativity, fortitude, and resilience of people of every race and background. During National African American History Month, we celebrate the many achievements and contributions made by African Americans to our economic, cultural, spiritual, and political development. In 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson founded The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Through that Association, he began pressing for the establishment of Negro History Week as a way to bring national attention to the accomplishments of African Americans. He hoped to neutralize the apparent distortions in Black history and to provide a more objective and scholarly balance to American and World history. Dr. Woodson's dream became a reality in 1926. He chose the second week of February for the observance because of its proximity to the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two individuals whom Dr. Woodson felt had dramatically affected the lives of African Americans. And in 1976, the Association succeeded in expanding the observance, which then became Black History Month.

Wntr, 2002 by Drew E. VandeCreek
ABSTRACT The Abraham Lincoln Historical Digitization Project produces Lincoln/Net (http://lincoln.lib.niu.edu), a free-use World Wide Web site that presents primary source materials from Lincoln's Illinois years together with interpretive materials discussing his life and context. OVERVIEW In 1860, Lincoln's Republican Party handlers presented him to the American people as a "representative man" who had shared experiences like westward migration, manual labor, and limited schooling with a majority of American voters. Just as Lincoln's life resonated with voters over a century ago, his experiences can shed new light upon this important period in American history as well. Lincoln/Net uses Lincoln's remarkable biography as a lens through which to examine and interpret social, cultural, and political life in his Illinois surroundings during the decades before the Civil War. This period informed Lincoln's presidency. As a resident of a northern state with a large population of southern-born citizens and southern sympathizers, Lincoln brought a finely honed appreciation for the delicacy of sectional politics to Washington. As an early member of the Republican Party, he brought a keen awareness of the abolitionists' agenda and impatience along as well. As a native of a border state, he aimed his wartime policy toward keeping states like Kentucky, Missouri, and Maryland in the Union and out of the Confederacy. As an attorney and Whig, Lincoln brought an abiding, and almost mystical, love of the Union to the White House.

February is the month we celebrate presidential birthdays and begin looking at AMERICA’S ROAD TO THE MILLENNIUM. Each president played a role in shaping America’s history. Studying their lives and times gives a panoramic view of America as it grew from a colony to agricultural nation to world power. The following sites will highlight some of the events and decisions that helped shape the journey.
*** PRESIDENT’S DAY: An Educational Virtual Museum For Primary Students
Sheila Simmons, Penryn Elementary School District, designed this wonderful easy to read, illustrated Washington and Lincoln virtual museum site for elementary students. Teachers will find President’s Day Activities , recommended books ( Literature ) , and a Bibliography . Power Point Presentations on the two presidents are available from the author " to be shown to a whole class, utilized in a computer lab, or viewed on individual computers." Two highly awarded sites created by American History teacher, Roger Norton, on Lincoln can be reached using Student Activity-One: Comparing Washington and Lincoln . Scroll down to An Overview of Lincoln or to Abraham Lincoln A Timeline to locate detailed information on Lincoln’s life and extensive information on his death. If you are studying Abraham Lincoln or the Presidential Assassinations these are MUST sites. Middle school students can use these sites independently. Younger students may need some help.*** (This site was revised February 25,2000. There are some changes. However, they appear to be minor and should not create a navigation problem ).
