Transition to Preschool An interview with Sharon Rosenkoetter, Ph.D., contributor to Reforming Personnel Preparation in Early Intervention: Issues, Models, and Practical Strategies. From the June 2001 Early Childhood newsletter. Q: How can parents prepare their young children with disabilities for preschool? Transition is not a one-day event but rather a process that extends over many months, both before and after the first day of school. Knowing that parents leave and come back is a critical learning experience for every child. That knowledge comes from separations that begin with small steps long before the first day of school and continue to increase in duration and unfamiliarity throughout childhood. Q: What information are early intervention programs required to provide to parents to assist in the transition process? The issue is not just "providing information" but that families should be full partners in planning and implementing their child's transition, to the extent that they wish to be involved. The intention of IDEA 1997 is that families should be partners in transition planning. Recommended practices from many professional organizations emphasize that "program policies require a family-centered approach in all decisions and phases of service delivery".* At the very least, such participation involves families

Wildfire Preschool fire safety taught by video conference FIRE CHIEF STAFF Apr 1, 1999 12:00 PM E-mail this article The New York State's Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and Bic Corp., Milford, Conn., sponsored a 2H-hour interactive video seminar on how to teach preschoolers life-saving fire safety skills. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Robert Cole, a national authority on fire safety education and associate professor at the University of Rochester, and broadcast via satellite to 70 sites, where hundreds of licensed daycare providers and fire service educators statewide were taught the "play safe! be safe!" program. Developed by educators with a grant from Bic Corp., the program has been used in thousands of classrooms throughout the United States and Canada since its launch in 1994. The lesson package includes a 20-minute video, a teacher's manual, and a variety of supporting activities including a card game, vinyl activity boards and illustrated story cards. The fire safety seminar was interactive. Participants at all sites were able to ask questions by fax or phone, and Cole answered them on the air. Early childhood development experts were at each of the sites to provide additional information. All participants heard both the questions and the answers, as telephone conversations were broadcast via satellite.

Selection Safety Hardware Resources As technology becomes a bigger part of children's lives, so does the need to pay attention to the health issues of using computers. Children need to be taught simple safety principles from the time they begin using computers. Don't overlook the obvious when children use computers: Don't sit too close to the monitor Take frequent rest breaks and "eye breaks" Stand up, stretch and wiggle often Blink frequently Avoid using the mouse for long periods of time For children as well as adults, bad posture can cause sore wrists, eye fatigue, headaches, neck strain and even back pain. Since kids may be using computers both at home and at school, there is the potential for problems to develop over time. To prevent eye problems avoid flickering lights or glare on the screen, and look away from the monitor frequently. (This is true for video games also.) Get up and walk around (moving around rests both the eyes and the body), focus on a distant object, remember not to stare at the screen, and blink often.
