Keep Your Kids Safe
Accidents are the leading cause of death for children. Most of these deaths could easily be prevented and it is therefore important to keep your child's safety in mind at all times. Here are some advice and tips to keep your preschooler safe:
  • more books Use a toddler/convertible safety seat in the back seat. Continue to use it until your child outgrows it when he is about 40lbs and then use a booster seat until your car's lap and shoulder belts fit correctly (when your child weighs 80lbs and is 4ft 9 inches tall) and never place your child in the front seat of a car with a passenger side airbag. Also be careful if your car has side impact air bags. See our Car Seat Safety Guide for more information.

    Preschool Safety Education
Young children deserve to live and play in safe environments, and it is the responsibility of every adult to help keep children safe. Preschool children should not be expected to actively protect themselves; however, it is important to offer children the opportunity to learn about safety as early in life as possible. Learning safe habits during early years may have life long benefits. Integrating safety education into the daily curriculum can help children learn and practice safety. Caregivers can improve the chance of success by working in partnership with parents and guardians to encourage safety education for children. Teaching children about safety is not that different from early childhood education in general, but safety information may prove particularly important during potentially dangerous times. Children take information literally, and may be easily frightened, especially if they sense tension or fear from adults. Teachers and caregivers should use developmentally-appropriate practices when teaching children about safety and focus on behaviors the child can do to stay safe, rather than on situations that are out of their control. For example, children can learn to fasten a seat belt, but they cannot do anything about adults who drive too fast. Daily Routines Consistent routines and adult modeling are essential in safety education. Implementing safety measures throughout the day, such as counting all children when loading or unloading the bus or cars, taking attendance each day, and checking for all children before leaving the center or playground, helps children see that their safety is valued.Incorporating safety activities into the daily routine is an ideal way to help children establish early safety habits. For example, to prevent falls, preschool children can learn to push their chairs under the table when they get up, clean up their spills, tie their shoes, and walk, not run, when indoors. Practicing emergency drills on a regular schedule gives children an opportunity to become familiar with them and may minimize their panic during true emergencies.

    White Springs
How We Do Preschool: A Parent’s Guide
Introduction: From the very beginning, White Springs has always been a “family” church. We seek the safety, love, and wellbeing that good families experience at home in every church activity. We love preschoolers. God expects us to teach, protect and love them with excellence. Who knows? Great future spiritual leaders may be in our midst! Nevertheless, every child is a creation of God and deserves the best of care. These policies reflect love and concern for all children regardless of background, race, culture, economic status, etc.
Our Goals for Children To teach and demonstrate to preschoolers how to . . . Love and respect others. Love their church and attend happily. Love themselves and all other creations of God. Love God’s special “book,” the Bible. Love Jesus.
When Does the Preschool Department Function?
During Sunday School, Sunday Morning/Evening Worship, Disciplefest (Sunday evenings), Wednesday Evening Worship, Adult Choir Practice, other special church-wide activities.
For Parents: How We Do Class Sunday School is a time to reinforce what you’ve been teaching your child spiritually, emotionally, socially and intellectually. We use an “age-graded” approach:

Whether camping by a lake or playing at the park, keeping toddlers and preschoolers safe is a matter of vigilance and common sense.
Children love to spend time outdoors, and so they should. Outdoor play provides kids with a chance to get exercise and fresh air. But with toddlers and preschoolers accidents can happen, and it’s important to ensure that our children are well protected and supervised.
From splashing in a playground wading pool to diving off a dock, one of the greatest outdoor activities for youngsters is water play. But when it comes to young children, water can easily lead to tragedy. Therefore it’s imperative that you "never let them out of your sight for a minute as they will disappear in a matter of seconds.” says Marine Safety Officer, Ken Burton who adds that “if you have a backyard pool the most important thing a parent or adult can do is make sure there are never unsupervised children around the water. They’ll throw toys in, then fall in and this often leads to tragedy.”
Burton says one of best ways of keeping kids water-safe is by having them learn to swim under the guidance of a qualified instructor through a recognized swim program. “Whether it’s a YMCA or Red Cross, or lessons at your community, get them out there in the water so that they feel comfortable and develop a good deal of respect for the water under controlled conditions.”

From fairs to malls, it's important we teach our kids the right stuff to prevent them from getting lost in the crowds.
Finding ourselves in large crowds is something that's difficult to avoid. Whether it's a movie theater or museum, theme park or fair, crowds and kids often go hand in hand.
When we do take our children to a busy, crowded place it's important to take a few moments to familiarize yourself and your children with the environment you're in. Point out to your children who the security people are that they can turn to for help, and be specific by pointing out the color of shirt or the hats that the security personnel wear. Once you've done that you should make a little plan, says police officer Tim Fanni. "What we have to do when we take our children out to malls, air shows and other places is to talk about your plan. The idea is to keep yourself and your children safe, be aware of your surroundings and have a plan."
So, as well as pointing out who you child can turn to for help, with the older child, you could decide on a meeting place such as a mall fountain or information booth where you would meet if you become separated.
