Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Childcare Workers
Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • About 2 out of 5 childcare workers are self-employed; most of these are family childcare providers.
  • A high school diploma and little or no experience are adequate for many jobs, but training requirements vary from a high school diploma to a college degree.
  • Large numbers of workers leave these jobs every year, creating good job opportunities.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Childcare workers nurture and teach children of all ages in childcare centers, nursery schools, preschools, public schools, private households, family childcare homes, and before- and afterschool programs. These workers play an important role in a child’s development by caring for the child when parents are at work or away for other reasons. Some parents enroll their children in nursery schools or childcare centers primarily to provide them with the opportunity to interact with other children. In addition to attending to children’s basic needs, these workers organize activities that stimulate the children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth. They help children to explore their interests, develop their talents and independence, build self-esteem, and learn how to get along with others.

25. The Preschool Day – General Daily Schedule – The "Free Play" Period
general Daily Schedule Free Play Period, Play is the way all children learnthe majority of their preschool lessons. It trains the muscles and senses.
http://www.kartini-preschool.or.id/freeplay.html
General Daily Schedule
"Free Play" Period T he "Free Play" period of about an hour usually begins the child’s preschool day. Many early childhood educators would consider this hour to be the most important one of the time spent at preschool. At “free play” time the child is motivated by his or her own interests and imagination as well as those of the peer group. During the "free play time" there is daily opportunity for painting at the easels, drawing and other creative art experiences. In a very real sense, " Play is the work of childhood ". There is unanimous agreement among early childhood specialists that play is crucial not only to physical growth but to the child’s intellectual, social, and emotional growth. A quote from the book by Kenneth Eble’s, "A Perfect Education", expresses this most succinctly:
"Play is the way all children learn the majority of their preschool lessons.
It trains the muscles and senses.
It refines judgments.
It involves the individual in society. It shapes dreams and presents realities.
It is unencumbered by formal structures.

Preschool Curriculum Introduction This curriculum is written for the children of the Oasis preschool program. It is the result of many hours of hard work and prayer. This introduction is intended to acquaint you with and instruct you on how best to use the material. General Information
In order for each team to be adequately prepared and unified in presenting the material to the children, ALL members of the team should read and be familiar with the lesson each week before entering the classroom. Each activity reinforces the teaching. Therefore, as you play your role on the team it is important that you are prepared to dialogue with the children and to help them connect each activity with the concept for the day. Because repetition is effective in learning and remembering, it is important that the concept be repeated frequently throughout the class time. Format
The lessons are formatted so you can see the concept, goals, passage, key verse and needed supplies at a glance. The lessons are worded as suggested script for the teacher. (Wording in parenthesis is intended as instruction for the teacher or intended answers for questions.)
