What is a request for an item/activity? Requesting an item/activity indicates the desire to gain or maintain access to a preferred object or activity. Who would benefit from being taught to request items/activities? A variety of children who engage in challenging behaviors would benefit from being taught to request items/activities. 1. Gain Preferred Items Children who engage in challenging behaviors in order to obtain items or activities would benefit from being taught a communicative request. Larry bangs his head on the floor when he wants a preferred toy. When he engages in this behavior, caregivers offer him an array of preferred items. What is a request for a break? A request for a break is a communicative intervention in which the child completes a portion of an activity and then requests a break. Following the break, the child returns to the activity. Who would benefit from being taught a request-a-break response? Children whose challenging behaviors are escape-motivated (i.e., engage in challenging behavior in order to escape a situation) would benefit from being taught to request a break. Consider, for example, a young boy who participates in a structured activity for a brief amount of time and then begins to engage in aggressive behaviors toward his peers when he becomes fatigued. Another child may become bored and start to scream. Being provided with a means to communicate the desire to have a task briefly interrupted (e.g., Sign Break, please

  • It's fun . Play is how a child learns so make playtime rich with learning activities. The creative parents will have just as much fun as the children. It's easy . A walk in the park, digging in the sandbox, pulling out the crayons and paper - learning happens naturally, every day. Bonding . What better way to bond than to share a favorite picture book with the baby in your arms without distractions. Children learn quickly. You've heard the saying "minds like sponges." Learning brings understanding and order to what may seem like a chaotic world. Boost to child's self-esteem!

    WORDS OF WISDOM FOR TEACHERS

    The Hand Holders:
    A Tribute To Caregivers
    There is no job more important than yours,
    no job anywhere else in the land.
    You are the keepers of the future;
    you hold the smallest of hands.
    Into your care you are trusted
    to nurture and care for the young,
    and for all of your everyday heroics,
    your talents and skills go unsung. You wipe tears from the eyes of the injured. You rock babies brand new in your arms. You encourage the shy and unsure child. You make sure they are safe from all harm. You foster the bonds of friendships, letting no child go away mad. You respect and you honour their emotions. You give hugs to each child when they're sad. You have more impact than does a professor, a child's mind is moulded by four; so whatever you lay on the table is whatever the child will explore. Give each child the tools for adventure, let them be artists and writers and more;

    Fun Preschool Activity WHY DO I HAVE TO...
    TEACHING OBJECTIVE/BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
    When your child arrives at the point in their preschool years when they understand that the rules you have made for him can be questioned you will most likely hear these words, "Why do I have to? Perhaps he is aware that other kids have rules that are different from his. Or, he may not understand why some of the rules you have made for your family are enforced by you. He needs reasons. This may be the perfect time to explain that everyone has to follow certain rules, even you. Talk about how government works and laws are made. Explain to him that the rules you make for him to follow will help him learn to stay out of trouble and get along with others, just as the laws that you have to follow do. You can name some of those laws such as taking things that don't belong to you, lying to other people, following driving rules when using the car, etc. When he comes up with a question that is appropriate for an authority to answer suggest that you help him write to the person you feel can help him. If you need to write the letter for him, use his words, make it simple and be sure he prints his own name above his first and last name you put at the end of the letter. As you write this formal communication to someone like the President of The United States, explain to him just what you are doing. He needs to learn the necessity of including his address, the date and his name. Rest assured that the White House will answer even the simplest letter that has a logical question that they can answer, and think about how excited your youngster will be when he gets that letter in the mail from The White House addressed to him. It will not only answer his question, but will teach him that all people are important to our government.

    Early Childhood Education: The Key to Success in Life Nelson Mandela, the well-known statesmen, once said, "Education is the great engine to personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that the child of a farm worker can become the president of a great nation." A study by High/Scope Educational Research Foundation of Ypsilanti, Michigan, showed the significant value of early learning. From 1962-1967, 123 African Americans, all aged 3 to 4 and born in poverty, and therefore at a high risk of later failing in school, were randomly divided into two groups. One group was exposed to a high-quality preschool program while the control group was not exposed to any preschool programs. The program that the experimental group was exposed to was based on High/Scope's active learning approach. In the study's most recent phase, 95% of the participants were interviewed at age 27. Additional data were gathered from the subjects' school, social service and arrest records. The most significant findings of this study were:
    • Almost a third as many of those attending the preschool program, opposed to those with no preschool exposure (71% vs. 54%) graduated from regular or adult high school, or received their General Education Development Certificate.

    HOW TO TEACH - PHYSICAL

    • In order for a child to be productive for any amount of time, they must move. If you do not provide movement activities for them, they will provide their own. As you will know if you have spent any amount of time in church.
      Include walks, park visits and field trips. Anytime you go on a walk, to a park, or on a field trip as a preschool activity, give the children a purpose. Have them look for everything that is green or have them find circles or squares. Ask them to see if they can find out what each animal eats at the zoo or the animal farm, or have them see if they can go on the swings, teeter-totter, slide, and monkey bars 3 times each. Having a purpose does not mean that anything else they stop to look at is a distraction. Maybe when you see that they are picking up every rock or touching every bug, you will want to change your focus. Don’t criticize them for being children. Allow them some room, but having a purpose gives a little more meaning to your outings.
      Find lots of different ways to move. You thought you could only move like a person? How would you move if you were spaghetti? How would you melt if you were a glacier? How would you blow yourself up if you were a balloon? Let the children choose ways to move. Follow them. Teach them different kinds of dance: ballet, jitterbug, tap, modern. I think that most children love to dance and believe that they can, until someone laughs at them or criticizes them. Never, NEVER let that someone be you. It will come too soon as it is.
