Fun Preschool Activity Mommy Cat/Baby Kitten
TEACHING OBJECTIVE/BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
When you play this game with your preschooler, you not only have a lot of fun, you'll be training her to fine tune her hearing. The more discriminating she can be when she hears sounds, the easier it will be for her to hear and remember the sounds individual letters make. This, of course, will help make her a good reader. MATERIALS NEEDED:
You and your child An area in your home that has lots of hiding places and is very quiet An undisturbed period of time (you might want to turn off the phone/dishwasher/washing machine etc.)
ACTIVITY STEPS: Pretend you and your child are kittens crawling around on the floor. Practice your meows some soft, some loud, some over and over, some just once, etc. as you crawl, stretch, sit up, and more. Teach your child the following song (you can either sing or chant the words)
Warm Kitty, Soft Kitty, Little Ball of Fur

Fun activities to promote listening skills

Preschool
by Holly Hanke Do you feel as if you spend more time talking at your child than to Here are some games and activities to boost your child's listening skills. Because children learn in different ways, the games are arranged by learning style. If you're not sure what type of learner your child is, take our quiz . But any child can benefit from the suggestions in all three categories. What's below: For auditory learners For physical learners For visual learners For auditory learners
Talk to your child all the time. Make reading an interactive activity.
When reading a book to your child, stop before turning the page and say, "What do you think will happen next?" Ask her to explain her answer to see how well she's listened to what you've read so far. If she seems unsure about what happened, start again. Ask your child to predict how a story will end.
Read a book aloud to your child and stop just before the last page. Ask her to guess how the story will turn out, based on what she's already heard. Then finish the story and discuss the ending with your child. Was her prediction accurate, or was there a surprise ending? If the latter, were there any clues to the ending planted earlier in the story? Revisit an old favorite.

The auditory learner

Preschool to Kindergarten
by S. Jhoanna Robledo What's below: What is an auditory learner? What are the benefits of knowing my child's learning style? What can I do to help my auditory child excel at preschool and kindergarten? How can I address my auditory child's weaknesses in other areas? ... Where can I get more information about learning styles? What is an auditory learner?
Auditory learners understand new ideas and concepts best when they hear the information. If you peek into a classroom, they're the ones who learn a tune in a snap just from hearing their teacher sing it, or who can follow directions to the letter after being told only once or twice what to do. Other auditory learners concentrate better at a task when they have music or white noise in the background, or retain new information better when they talk it out. If you haven't already, take our learning styles quiz to find out for sure if your child is an auditory learner. What are the benefits of knowing my child's learning style?

Pencil-Pal Software Preschool
A new series from School Zone Interactive, Pencil-Pal Software combines a 64-page workbook with a CD-ROM to give children multiple experiences to learn educational material both on and off the computer. Set in a barn, preschoolers play with barnyard buddies Sherman Sheep, Fancy Filly and others. The barn houses five learning areas. The other learning areas include a dot-to-dot activity, a virtual movie theater that shows 12 learning videos, an art studio, and a silly joke activity. Parents should use the workbook first to teach concepts to their youngsters, and then use the CD-ROM to reinforce the concepts they have taught.

Reader Rabbit Preschool: Sparkle Star Rescue!
Kids travel around the Land of Sparkalot playing six games to collect Brillites, special stones that can cause an eruption in Mt. Brill strong enough to dislodge the pirate ship. To play the different games, children use skills in sorting and matching shapes and colors, matching letters and sounds, and counting and addition. This software is actually a charming learning adventure for kindergartners. It earned only a 4-star rating because its material is too difficult for its targeted audience.

It sounds like your child has mastered some of the preschool readiness skills. Therefore you can use these skills to further enhance your child's knowledge by including skills in the following areas. These are: visual, auditory, fine motor, gross motor, tactile, problem solving, language arts, math/science, art/music/movement in addition to skills in emotional and social development.
Most preschools not only teach the alphabet but also include and teach the letter sounds and the significance in reading. Also concepts such as what letter is comes before another, what is after, what is next to, between, etc? The teaching of beginning and ending sounds of words, rhyming words will also be beneficial for a child's learning. All of these skills can be taught in game form. Young children learn best through meaningful play activities.
Use your child's knowledge of shapes, colors and numbers to further enrich his learning through play activities. Suggested activities are mentioned in my book "Slow and Steady, Get Me Ready" found in many libraries. Since you already have Mary Pride's "The Big Book Of Home Learning" you can scan the pages for other reviews and resources for preschool books containing preschool activities. Learning can be fun for your child.

There are many skills you can teach your 21 month old if you know what to do, when and what each skill develops. Young children learn best through meaningful play activities.
Close interaction with your child can help to develop a lasting parent/child bond. "Play is a child's work".
Skills that involve fine and gross motor activities as well auditory and visual skills are a must. As you interact with your child, do activities that will aid in language development as well as thinking and problem solving experiences. Music/ rhythms/art and free movement activities can be fun and at the same time enrich your child's knowledge in these areas. Exposure to simple math and science activities will further aid in preparing your child with readiness skills that are necessary for him to meet success in school.
Bought materials can be expensive and are not needed for many simple activities. Because materials found at home can be used to teach most of these skills.

Some parents enroll their children in nursery schools or child-care centers primarily to provide them with the opportunity to interact with other children. In addition to attending to children’s basic needs, these workers organize activities that stimulate the children’s physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth.
