    199th Meeting of General Synod
The Moderator's Challenge We, the members of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church,
in order to carry out God's mission and move forward together into the next century, profess our life together in Christ and our desire to set forth a united strategy for the work of His church. We express our desire to continue to be a Presbyterian and Reformed church, committed to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and to the Bible as the Word of God. Rooted in and shaped by a living tradition, we are part of the new creation in Christ which God is bringing into existence. Therefore, we are committed to:
    • The worship of the Triune God. The Holy Scriptures as the basis for our faith and activity. Unity with other believers in Christ. Excellence in education and equipping leaders for tomorrow.

Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings crystallized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him. (sent via e-mail 9:24 p.m.est 2/19/04)
I remember the times in school we were asked to share something we learned on vacation. Once I learned the system, and knew that it would be expected, I would begin to look for that one special experience to share with the class. The result was often that I went to class with a rock from some famous riverbank or a tourist figurine. That same feeling has met me again this week as I have thought about what I should write for these updates. I have heard a number of amazing stories. I have made a number of specific observations about the theology of the rural people and have gathered more data than I thought possible in a week. I have also walked six hours a day, every day, up and down mountains, and don’t have any pain in my legs. This afternoon as I was sitting at the table eating lunch it hit me. The two guys who have been accompaning me this week had said to the woman we were visiting they we were hungry. After the interview, she got up and made lunch for the three of us, just as others had done for the previous three days. I had thought that lunch was set up beforehand, to make me comfortable. As it turns out, it is just the way things are done. If you have a hungry person in you home, you feed them whether you know them or not. With rice and beans and tortillas they showed us that we are a part of their family.
