The prehistory of Finland in a nutshell
Written for Virtual Finland byDr. Pirjo Uino, Docent, Curator, Department of Archaeology, National Board of Antiquities,
e-mail: pirjo.uino@nba.fi Photo: National Board of Antiquities/Esa Suominen Finnish snake-shaped brooches (AD 600 - 800) When was the first human settlement established in Finland? Until very recently it has been thought that the first people to arrive did not come until just over 10,000 years ago during the Mesolithic period. Finds from the warm interglacial period before the last Ice Age had been limited to plant and animal remains, including mammoth bones and teeth. There had been no discoveries of anything suggesting human activity this far back. Links

Remains of Viking Harbor Complex Found

OSLO, Norway Archaeologists in western Norway found the remains of a harbor complex built by the Vikings 1,000 years ago the first of its kind discovered in the country. Experts quickly reasoned that the Vikings would need a major harbor at just that location because it is a short distance from Frostating , a site where Vikings gathered for huge decision-making assemblies and festivals.
