Office hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays before class (1:00-2:00 pm) and by appointment Course Description and Objectives WORLD PREHISTORY is an archaeology course that focuses on the evolution of human culture and ancient civilizations. The course starts with a brief examination of human origins and the beginnings of culture. It will then trace the development of society from early hunters and foragers to sedentary city dwellers through archaeological investigations from around the world. Theories, methods, and interpretations of cultural evolution will be examined in an attempt to appreciate how and why cultures change over time. Additionally, we will consider how the past is relevant to modern life. We will examine how some of the factors causing change are still operating in our own society today and how cultural traditions are being reused in modern society. Class periods will include lectures, discussions, and visual presentations concerning ancient cultures from around the world as understood from the archaeological and documentary record. Required Reading Images of the Past by T.D. Price and G.M. Feinman, 2001. Mayfield Publishing, third edition (available at Bill's Bookstore).

      Introduction
Man, so ill prepared to compete in a hostile world, used ingenuity and a little luck to begin the long journey toward civilization. As a hunter-gatherer he led a nomadic life, honing his skills and improving his technology. Once he became a food producer he could settle down and the elements of civilization began to evolve. Prehistoric Art includes cave painting, engraving, sculpture and monolithic architecture. For art considered to be primitive, it is remarkably sophisticated and perceptive. From simple line drawings to polychromatic paintings, from engravings on rock to beautiful three dimensional "Venus" figures, from monolithic monuments to circles and passage graves, art served as a means communication, ritual and an outlet for man's creative spirit. Music and dance also became part of the human experience during prehistoric times. Back to Top

The PREMIER JOURNEY to The Ancient World, weaving together the Peoples of those lands and civilizations and the way they lived and - their thoughts, their hopes, their dreams, their lives.
What is the Ancient World? Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Sumer, Nubia, Persia, Byzantium, Turkey? Or is it Assyrians, Chaldeans, Hebrews, Hittites, Akkadians, Etruscans, Minoans? Is it Alexander, Plato, Virgil, Socrates, Hammurabi, Aristotle, Nefertiti, the Pharaohs, Emperors, Caesar, Cleopatra, Sargon, Akhenaton, the Black Athena, Homer? Or is it the dinosaurs, Stonehenge, hunters, slaves, women, rulers, soldiers, or the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Odyssey, the Olympics? Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.
