Fri. June 11, 2004 Facts on…Pregnancy with VIDEO CLIP Fact: Young adults generally have no idea how much effort and preparation it takes to have a healthy pregnancy. Fact: Most first-time parents (a) think pregnancy won’t change their habits and routines all that much, (b) don’t begin to worry until it turns their lives upside down, and (c) believe their parents hold the answers to all of their many questions. Fortunately, there is Facts on…Pregnancy to help students get the vital information they need. Conversational in tone yet authoritative in content, this interactive electronic reference guide systematically explains what is to be expected at each stage of pregnancy, from conception to birth. Plenty of images and audio effects support the disc’s targeted data on health considerations, potential complications, and important medical tests, while fact vs. myth quizzes help students recognize misinformation that can be confusing and even dangerous to a mother-to-be and her unborn child. Plus, a list of frequently asked questions can put into words the concerns that some students may not feel comfortable discussing, while a listing of pregnancy-related Web sites, organizations, and educational resources is provided for any who may want more information. A glossary helps ensure that specialized terminology is crystal clear, and material on each stage of pregnancy is printable, for handy offline reference.

Today's Urgent Actions
Write to Elected Officials Donate Today Rights. Respect. Responsibility.® Campaign February 7, 2002
President George W. Bush
The White House
Washington, DC 20500
Dear President Bush:
The undersigned organizations, committed to responsible sexuality education for young people that includes age-appropriate, medically accurate information about both abstinence and contraception, urge you to reconsider increasing funding for unproven abstinence-only-until-marriage programs.
Research continues to show that a more comprehensive approach to sexuality education, which teaches both abstinence and contraception, is most effective for young people. Those who receive this kind of education are more likely to initiate sexual activity later in life and use protection correctly and consistently when they do become sexually active. Evaluations of comprehensive sexuality education programs found that these programs delay the onset of sexual activity, reduce the frequency of sexual activity, reduce the number of sexual partners, and increase condom and contraceptive use. Importantly, the evidence shows that these programs do not encourage teens to become sexually active. In short, responsible sexuality education programs work!
In contrast, there is little scientific evidence that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs that exclude information about contraception, except failure rates, are effective. Even your own Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy Thompson, expressed concerns about the 'paucity of evidence of [the] effectiveness' of these programs.

Margaret's responsibilities include foods, nutrition, health, wellness, safety, and housing. She is also the liaison agent for the Halifax County Extension Homemakers. EFNEP - Programs for Families and Youth
The EFNEP Nutrition Program Assistants teach small groups and individuals, both in the community and in the home. Participants learn such topics as food safety, choosing healthy foods, cooking from "scratch," meal planning, food storage and sanitation. Youth programs may also include such topics as fitness, avoiding substance abuse and home safety for latchkey children. Program priorities include greater cooperation with other agencies, both public and private. EFNEP offers group programs for hard-to-reach audiences, such as pregnant and parenting teens, families in temporary shelters, prerelease women prisoners and children in after-school care groups. Innovative projects include family day camps for parents and children; programs for pregnant teenagers; self-awareness/esteem programs for adolescents; and fitness/weight control programs at work sites. During the five years ending in 1992, the EFNEP program reached a total of 20,814 adults and 28,164 youth in North Carolina. Annually, the teaching by 110 Nutrition Program Assistants is supported by over 2,000 volunteers, who give about 30,000 hours.
