Ectopic Pregnancy
JOSIE L. TENORE, M.D., S.M.
Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois
E ctopic pregnancy is any pregnancy in which the fertilized ovum implants outside the intrauterine cavity. More than 95 percent of ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tubes. Another 2.5 percent occur in the cornua of the uterus, and the remainder are found in the ovary, cervix or abdominal cavity. Because none of these anatomic sites can accommodate placental attachment or a growing embryo, the potential for rupture and hemorrhage always exists. A ruptured ectopic pregnancy is a true medical emergency. It is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the first trimester and accounts for 10 to 15 percent of all maternal deaths. Epidemiology The number of ectopic pregnancies has increased dramatically in the past few decades. Based on hospital discharge data, the incidence of ectopic pregnancy has risen from 4.5 cases per 1,000 pregnancies in 1970 to 19.7 cases per 1,000 pregnancies in 1992.

Student Activities General Information The academic study of family relations has been offered by major universities for years, but Messiah College was the first Christian liberal arts institutions to offer this course of study and it remains one of few such programs available in the country. Most people consider the family to be the basic building block of society and, therefore, crucial to the functioning of both the church and society as a whole. Because the family is fundamental to our well-being, it is important that the Christian community contributes to the development of practitioners and scholars in the area of family relations. The Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) major program at Messiah College was the second academic program in the nation to be affirmed by the National Council on Family Relations' (NCFR) Academic Program Review Committee for Certified Family Life Education. "Congress is entitled to some degree of deference in its assessment of the factual basis for legislation. [The federal abortion ban], though, is an example less of diligent fact-finding then of ideological fact-twisting; its backers relied on the opinions of anti-abortion physicians, disregarded conflicting facts and misrepresented others."
The Washington Post , June 6, 2004 Pregnant and Punished
Abortion Foes Let Their Zeal Trump Strategy

It is not one judge's hostility or philosophy that imperils the abortion ban as it heads toward the U.S. Supreme Court. It is the hostility and philosophy of the ban's own advocates, whose determination to moralize the language of the debate and to build a "culture of life" makes their legislation medically confusing and resistant to judicial line-drawing.
    LA Times Misuse of Authority
Congressman Chris Smith and his colleagues used government resources to pressure independent lawmakers in Uruguay to keep abortion unsafe and illegal. Tell Us Your Story: Women Refused Birth Control by Pharmacists
In an outrageous move to stop women from preventing unintended pregnancies, some pharmacists in New York, Texas, and Wisconsin have refused to fill prescriptions for emergency contraception and other birth control pills. PPFA is fighting back and you can, too. Tell us your story and help stop anti-choice ideology from threatening women’s health. Women in the Military Deserve a Choice
Current law prohibits women in the United States military and their dependents stationed overseas from obtaining abortions in military hospitals unless the woman's life is in danger. Remind Congress that women in the military should have the right to make their own reproductive choices.

Faculty and staff design, develop, deliver and evaluate human development and family life education programs. These efforts focus on issues related to the quality of child care for all children, children who are at-risk due to poverty and living in dangerous environments, risky behavior in adolescents such as teen pregnancy, substance abuse and school failure and stressful family transitions due to divorce, remarriage, death and other life events. The faculty and staff are interested in developing innovative delivery strategies through the use of information technology as well as developing effective strategies for reaching high-risk children and families that involve collaboration across various organizations and agencies. Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic The Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic serves students, faculty and staff of the University, as well as the greater Columbus community. This clinic provides training for doctoral students enrolled in the marriage and family therapy program while under the direct supervision of MFT clinical faculty. Marriage and family therapy is concerned with the problems and needs of marriage and family relationships.
