    Nutrition, Vitamins and Pregnancy
    by Peter Weiss, M.D.
Most women when they are pregnant will be given a prenatal multi-vitamin, which includes all the daily vitamins that they will need, plus folic acid. Folic acid is very important in pregnancy. Folic acid is required in your increased maternal metabolism, and red blood cell formation. All the folic acid that is needed should be found in your prenatal multi-vitamin. Vitamins are very important to the developing fetus. However, you should be aware that too much can cause grave problems in the baby, so consult your physician before taking ANY vitamins or supplements. Let's run through the basic vitamins and their importance:
    • Vitamin A - Important in the fetus in bone growth and for tooth structure.
Vitamin D - Helps normal bone and tooth development by helping absorption of calcium. Vitamin E - Helps with the maintenance of your blood. Vitamin C - Needed for maintaining healthy tissue and blood vessels. Vitamin B Complex - Varies, but helps in forming red blood cells, also the nervous system.

I will state this as clearly as I can: This is a guideline for the EASIEST way to get all the nutrients and calories you need in pregnancy, especially a high level of protein and the calories you need to use the protein as building blocks rather than for fuel. There are other ways to do it if you are vegetarian, vegan, eat low fat, or don't like/tolerate a particular food. Please see the books referenced at the end for more details on substituting foods! Every Day, you should have: (examples given are one serving) (Remember, each category is separate and you cannot fill two with one food - if you eat 3 oz of cheese, it can be a protein or a milk, but not both!) 1 Quart of Milk (4 8-oz Glasses) - in any form: milk, cheese, yogurt, even ice cream (although try to watch the fat!) 2 Eggs (cooked any way, in french toast, added to other foods...)

Description Authorities agree that nutritional care for pregnant, about-to-be pregnant, and nursing women can prevent health problems that are costly in terms of both dollars and quality of life. Yet many women still receive little guidance regarding maternal nutrition. Now, health care professionals can turn to a handy, practical guide for help in smoothly integrating maternal nutritional care into their practices.

    Pregnancy Nutrition
One of the single most important things that you can do for your baby is to be sure you are eating the right mix of the right foods. But with all the information available to us today, how can you tell the difference between the fad and the fact? The basics of sound nutrition are the basics of pregnancy nutrition. You must eat a variety of foods, and you must eat enough of them to support the work your body is doing. While pregnant your body uses about 200 extra calories a day, so you don't need to "eat for two," but you do need to be sure the food you are eating is the best quality available to you. Many women are concerned about the weight they gain during pregnancy, but if you are eating a healthy balanced diet, and not overeating, the weight will not be a concern. After your baby is born and the demands on your body have lessened (perhaps after you are done breastfeeding) your body will shed the extra fat it stores to keep you and your baby healthy. If you find yourself tired, irritable, sluggish and dim witted during this pregnancy, it may just be that you're not quite eating what you need. Check out the information available on this site, and on others linked to it to see if you should be making any changes.

    Introduction
Pregnancy is a time of increased nutritional needs, both to support the rapidly growing fetus and to allow for the changes occurring in the pregnant woman's body. Throughout pregnancy, recommended intakes of many vitamins and minerals are higher than those recommended prior to pregnancy. For example, the recommendation for folic acid is more than doubled and the recommendation for calcium is 50% higher during pregnancy. [1] How can you meet these increased needs by following a vegan diet? A series of studies [2,3] at the Farm, a community where vegan diets are part of a socially responsible lifestyle, have shown that vegans can have healthy pregnancies and that infants and children can safely follow a vegan diet. This article will review nutritional needs during pregnancy and will describe how a vegan diet can be adapted to meet the higher nutritional needs associated with pregnancy. Although recommendations for many vitamins and minerals are higher in pregnancy, the increase in energy (calorie) requirements is relatively small. For this reason, some care and thought are needed by

    • Active Health Care Centres
    • The Student Research Facility, 1132 The Alameda, Berkeley, California, USA 94707.
There may be difficulties in reaching the second source as this flyer was printed several years ago, and there is no current contact for this group. If someone reads this and is aware of how to reach this group or its (former?) members, please notify us.
Readers should keep in mind that this was printed in the 1970's, at a time where medical practice was not as sensitive to the importance of nutrition in pregnancy as it is now. However, there is still a need for many physicians to pay more attention to the nutritional needs of expencting mothers. It is only recently that modern research has cought up with Dr. Brewers clinical findings. He is one of the unsung pioneers of nutritional therapeutics. Further editorial notes will be in emphasized characters.
