Vocabulary: Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes
Most words used in the English language today were not originally English. These words were borrowed (taken) from other languages. The majority of English words have Latin or Greek origins. When taking the TOEFL* (Test of English as a Foreign Language), it is helpful to know some of these origins or "roots" of English vocabulary. It may be possible to guess the meaning of an unknown word when one knows the meaning of its root. Knowing prefixes and suffixes can also assist in the process. An English word can consist of three parts: the root , a prefix and a suffix . The root is the part of the word that contains the basic meaning (definition) of the word. The root is the base element of the word. A prefix is a word element that is placed in front of a root. A prefix changes the word's meaning or makes a new word. A suffix is a word element that is placed after the root. The suffix changes the word's meaning as well as its function (use). Prefixes and suffixes are called affixes because they are attached to a root.

    Latin Roots, Prefixes, and Suffixes
In 1066 England was conquered by William, duke of Normandy, which is in northern France. For several hundred years after the Norman invasion, French was the language of court and polite society in England. It was during this period that many French words were borrowed into English. Linguists estimate that some 60% of our common everyday vocabulary today comes from French. Thus many Latin words came into English indirectly through French. Many Latin words came into English directly, though, too. Monks from Rome brought religious vocabulary as well as Christianity to England beginning in the 6th century. From the Middle Ages onward many scientific, scholarly, and legal terms were borrowed from Latin. During the 17th and 18th centuries, dictionary writers and grammarians generally felt that English was an imperfect language whereas Latin was perfect. In order to improve the language, they deliberately made up a lot of English words from Latin words. For example, fraternity, from Latin fraternitas, was thought to be better than the native English word brotherhood.

WebAnatomy What is Medical Terminology? Different professions have different "languages". An example of this is auto maintenance: automobile mechanics use terms to describe the objects and situations they encounter while working, such as "master cylinder" and "oil filter". Comparatively, medical workers use terms to describe the objects and situations encountered in their fields, such as "hepatitis" and "intravenous". The words - or terms - which make up the language of medicine are referred to as the terminology of the medical field, or Medical Terminology. In an SQL statement, a literal is a character representation of an actual data value. For example, in the following statement, ABC, FFFF, and 10 are literals: SELECT CharCol, BinaryCol, IntegerCol FROM MyTable WHERE CharCol = 'ABC' AND BinaryCol = 0xFFFF AND IntegerCol = 10 Literals for some data types require special prefixes and suffixes. In the preceding example, the character literal (ABC) requires a single quotation mark (') as both a prefix and a suffix, the binary literal (FFFF) requires the characters 0x as a prefix, and the integer literal (10) does not require a prefix or suffix. For all data types except date, time, and timestamps, interoperable applications should use the values returned in the LITERAL_PREFIX and LITERAL_SUFFIX columns in the result set created by SQLGetTypeInfo . For date, time, timestamp, and datetime interval literals, interoperable applications should use the escape sequences discussed in the preceding section.

A Grammar of Vabungula Part 4.2 - Prefixes and Suffixes
In many cases it is not easy to classify a Vabungula root as exclusively a prefix or a suffix, since many roots can be used as both. However, there are certain roots that function primarily or even exclusively as prefixes or suffixes. Here are some of the most common ones:
Prefixes do - good, holy; up na - bad, evil; down da - cause fa - do (note: sometimes the difference between da - and fa - becomes blurred) e - abstract (as opposed to concrete) ên - abstract, usually relating to social concepts le - intensive on - whole, entire fi/fwi - not, un- si - small ja - large ci - between, inter- ke - similar to, quasi la - at; towards mu(l) - become sa - having tu - this tê - that va - on vo - before ta - behind ze - same za - change into dzzu - give; (transitive) dzzû - take; (intransitive) o - various abstract applications, such as: forming relatives from interrogatives: kam ? = what? okam = what, that lam ? = where? olam = where various function words: oda = regarding odapro = as far as ... is concerned

    http://www.fortunecity.com/bally/limerick/123/gen/prefix.htm
web hosting domain names email addresses by Eibhlin MacIntosh The use of a surname developed spontaneously in various parts of Ireland and different times. The story that Brian Boru created the system is a wonderful legend, but not factual from the evidence. There may be some truth to the tale that an English king mandated names that indicate a profession or alliance with an English lord or town, but I haven't sorted that one out yet. Don't take it too seriously. Many Irish names actually have a meaning that you can determine by analyzing the parts of the name. For example, MAC was generally added to the father's first name. The son of Kenny would be MacKenny. The O before a name originally honored a grandfather's name, or the name of an earlier generation. The prefix FITZ comes from the French, fils , and means "son of," too. There is also a long-standing tradition that it identified children conceived out-of-wedlock, who then defiantly used Fitz plus the father's given name. I wouldn't take this too seriously either, but I mention it as a widely-assumed legend. NI has been primarily used by women, meaning "daughter of," followed by her father's name
