3c /1. Sir John Everett Millais (GB, 1829-1896) CHRISTOPHER SYKES, X2, 72 x 47, 1894. F28705.

Viz. BNL #126.
Painter and engraver, founder with Holman Hunt of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, President of the Royal Academy in 1896, Millais only seems to have made this single ex-libris. He chose St. Christopher as a backdrop to the Sykes arms, for the polititian Christopher Sykes (1831-1898). 3c /2. Frederick Leighton (GB, 1830-1896) GLADYS M. LEIGHTON, P1, 100 x 71, c.1890.
Lord Leighton of Stretton (he was created Baronet in 1886 and a peer in 1896, the only artist to be so honoured) was one of the grandees of the Victorian art world. This ex-libris is not very typical of Leighton’s painting style, and is obviously a small decora-tive piece done for a member of his family. 3c /3. Sir Edward Burne-Jones (GB, 1833-1898)) CICELY HORNER, X1, 90 x 68, c.1890. Viz. BNL #130, Ars decorativa 4, Budapest 1976.

In the normal course of events these twenty year old youths, with their romantic notions of self-importance, should have become mere footnotes of adolescent grandiosity. But there was a catch. All three of them were brilliant. Rossetti had a knack for capturing the sensuality of women with a startling palette of velvety greens and languid reds that seemed to catch the fancy of all the underground circles of the London art world and of symbolist France. John Everett Millais would go on to become one of the most famous portrait artists in England, and as mentioned above, eventually assumed the presidency of the Royal Academy. But in some respects it was the fame of William Holman Hunt though, that would prove to be the most astounding, for the reclusive Hunt would go on to paint one of the most famous pictures of all time. William Holman Hunt
It was a picture of Christ called "The Light of the World". In some respects Hunt's painting has not passed the test of time well, but time has a tendency to be fickle. In its day, the painting drew massive crowds of people to London. Nor did its fame stop at the shores of merry olde England. It captivated the world. It has been estimated that, in Australia alone, four million people, or four fifths of the population, saw the painting two or three times. As the art historian Gay Daly pointed out, Hunt's creation was the Star Wars of its time.

The Other Art Page
(Rossetti) Stunners: The Women the Pre-Raphaelites Loved There was a separate tradition within the Pre-Raphaelite movement of purely landscape painting, but the artists in this period were best known for their depictions of beautiful women. These have also given us the enduring image of the "typical" Pre-Raphaelite woman with her long wavy hair and rosebud mouth. The term used by the Pre-Raphaelites for their models was "stunners", and the first of these was Lizzie Siddal, a reserved girl with very pale skin and red hair. After meeting Dante Gabriel Rossetti and throughout the rest of her short life, Siddal was involved with Rossetti both as his model and his mistress. Following her death, Rossetti became involved artistically and romantically with Jane Morris. With her dark wavy hair and sullen expression, she epitomised the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of medieval beauty. (Rossetti) Being a model did have some advantages. Jane Burden, for example, became introduced to a different social circle through her relationship with William Morris, and eventually married him. Also, working class women were badly paid, and could earn far more modelling than in most of the "respectable" occupations open to them. A maid might earn five shillings for a very long week’s hard work, whereas an artist’s model could command payment of a shilling per hour. Believing women had the power to heal and provide spiritual guidance, the Pre-Raphaelites through their paintings evinced concern for the position of women in Victorian society and sought to raise them to the status they felt women deserved.

Ruskin was born in London on 8 February 1819 and died at his Lake District house Brantwood, Coniston on 20 January 1900. He was the only child of a prosperous sherry merchant who was able to provide him with an aristocratic education at Oxford. His mother instilled in him her strict evangelical Protestant views. Gifted both as writer and artist, he rose to fame with the publication of the first volume of Modern Painters in 1843. In 1848, he married Effie Gray but the marriage was annulled in 1854. Effie had fallen in love with the young painter Millais, a Pre-Raphaelite, whose work Ruskin had praised.

What's the difference between a Poster, a Photo, and an Art Print? A. Good question! The difference is usually in the paper quality and the exclusivity. Wall posters are printed in large volume on less expensive paper, Art Prints are printed on higher-quality thicker paper and usually in lower quantity. Photos prints are similar to what you get when you take your own film to a high quality photo developer, the only drawback to photo prints are that they are usually fairly small (8x10) the advantage is that they are very economical! The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, or PRB, was formed in 1848 as a group of young painters in Britain who wished to experiment with the Horatian principle of ut pictura poesis , which means (in a great oversimplification) that painting and poetry are merely two different ways of expressing the same ideas. The Brotherhood wished to "correct" the false principles on which the arts had been based since the time of Raphaelthey thought that beauty had supplanted truth in art, and that a return to the principles of truth and usefulness would create better art. With these ideas in mind, they began to paint and to compose poetry, some with more success in one area than in the other. Dante Gabriel Rossetti continued to paint and versify throughout his career, while others in the PRB soon found that their talents lay primarily in painting or in poetry, but not both. For fuller information about the movement, CLICK HERE Critical Opinion in the 19th Century The criticism garnered by the PRB was often derogatory, aiming to ridicule their "backward" aims in painting technique, their supposed Roman Catholic leanings, or the triteness of their poems. There is an extensive canon of the writings of the Pre-Raphaelites themselves, and one may find many examples of works

Goethe's theory of colours and the PreRaphaelites
STEVEN KOLSTEREN
Goethe's Theory of Colours and the Pre-Raphaelites Goethe based his Farbenlehre (1810) on the polarity of black and white. Looking through a vagueness or prism at black or white, he saw two basic colours: blue and yellow. Blue can be intensified to purple, yellow to orange-red. Red and purple together give magenta- the strong side- and yellow and blue together give green -the weak side-. Thus, he constructed a colour circle. Moreover, he gave advice to artists to use either characteristic combinations, harmonic combinations or use complementary colours. In 19th century British art, painters were interested in colour theories. J. M. W. Turner, for example, used Goethe's colour theory which was translated into English in 1840 by C. L. Eastlake, President of the Royal Academy of Arts. However, no-one has ever researched its influence on the Pre-Raphaelite painters and their bright, detailed colours. details of paintings by D.G.Rossetti, W.Holman Hunt, Arthur Hughes and Thomas Seddon
Goethe's Theory of Colours and the Pre-Raphaelites is a book-length, unpublished study of the colour theories in 19th century Victorian England and the colours of the Pre-Raphaelite painters in the years 1848-1860. In their use of complementary contrasting colours, they were precursors to the Impressionists.

The home page of Bob Speel
This page is dedicated mainly to 19th century British art, including Pre-Raphaelites and illustration , but more broadly Victorian and Edwardian paintings, sculpture architecture and other arts. The most useful part is the list of artists , which leads in to the artists' biographies. Below on this page are some links to longer notes on particular areas of interest. Also below is information on some places to see art in London (sketchy) and elsewhere in England (less sketchy). Here is some background information , and more on various movements, institutions, etc is available from the pages of individual artists. Pictures are mainly within the longer notes below, and on some of the artists' pages, and are as clickable thumbnails for speed of use. Recent changes include a continuing revamp of the architecture pages , with outline biographies now extending to some 30 mainly Victorian architects, and a page on sculpture and architecture in the vicinity of several bridges in London. Thoughts/comments/other regarding this site are welcome, though I am unable to write back to everyone. If you do wish to write, please put some sensible title as anything that looks like it might be spam I generally delete without opening. Please also note that this is not a commercial site, and I neither buy nor sell artworks or prints, nor speculate on values of artworks. Just art appreciation. (

Armand Point (French, 1861-1932) Biography Point was born in Algeria, but moved to Paris in 1888. He was awarded a medal at the exhibition of the Salon des Artistes Francais. He was influenced by Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1896 he founded a group called 'Hauteclaire', which produced under his direction a large number of ornamental objects. He exhibited in the Salon de la Rose+Croix from 1892-1896, defecting (in Peladan's view) from the final one in 1897. He went back for technical and artistic inspiration to Leonardo and Botticelli and felt that he was thereby leading a revival of modern art.
