126. Ceramics Art & Perception
Dick Lehman is a potter and writer who lives, works and maintains a fulltime studio in Goshen, Indiana, USA. ceramics art and Perception Pty Ltd, 120 Glenmore
Back Issues Advertising and Contributions Email Shiho Kanzaki; Moving Always Article by Dick Lehmnan Over the past several years I have enjoyed ongoing e-mail conversations with my friend and potter, Shiho Kanzaki. Kanzaki lives in Shigaraki, Japan. He produces pottery within the Shigaraki tradition, employing the long-established methods of that tradition to create and fire his works. As time has passed, our correspondence has steadily drifted toward the themes which we hold most important to our lives and art. With his permission, I share some excerpts from Kanzaki’s contributions to our conversations which I have found most stimulating.
Shiho Kanzaki describes his philosophy of life, living and pottery making.
The art of ceramics isn’t to be found in technique and skill alone. We must extend beyond technique. And it is those who are extending beyond technique who are becoming real potters: living within their spirits, thoughts and religion. Because they have already discarded their sense of self-will, they live in freedom. They move in a living way. As a result their works have a feeling of strength, and are full of life. It is important that we live our lives purposefully. Our spirits, thoughts and hearts – all parts of us – are constantly changing when we live with this sense of purpose. As we each strive to live up to the best that we know as a way of life, then that is when the ceramic work is the potter... the potter becomes embodied in the ceramic work itself. Out of our moments of true being come the ceramic work.

138. - Gather Around This Pot
Civilization Canada presentation on the diversity and richness of Native ceramic making traditions in Canada. Includes pottery making techniques and conservation of ceramics.
QUICK LINKS Home page Archaeology Arts and Crafts Civilizations Cultures First Peoples History Treasures Military history Artifact catalogue Library catalogue Other Web sites Boutique Well before Europeans reached this continent, Native peoples in many parts of Canada had mastered the art of producing durable, functional, and beautiful ceramic containers. The manufacture of ceramic containers requires an intricate knowledge of a complex technology. Pottery-making is foremost an understanding of material properties and the control of their modification through the application of heat. The earliest ceramics in Canada were made in the northern Yukon more than 3,500 years ago, within sight of the Arctic Ocean. That Siberian-inspired Palaeoeskimo pottery tradition, however, did not spread to more southern regions. The origins of the Aboriginal earthenware industry found south of Canada’s Arctic regions can be traced to the culturally rich lands draining into the valley of the Mississippi River. More than 2,500 years ago, ceramic pots appeared at many locations in southern Canada and gave rise to a number of distinct regional traditions. Ceramics were only one component in a much larger pulse of cultural influence emanating from the North American heartland. Ceramic pots served many purposes, but the most important was surely the preparation and cooking of food. As they were drawn to the warm fire of a hearth, people would regularly gather around the pot to share not only food, but also stories and information, laughter and sorrow. If only these pots could speak, what stories they would tell!
