Sifnos Pottery
It is not known when pottery began on the island though it is mentioned by Theophrastus in the third century B.C.. The oldest pottery found dates back to the eighth century B.C. and Pliny makes mention of Sifnos ceramics in the first century B.C. By the eighteenth century potters from Sifnos were traveling all over Greece selling and their ceramics and in many cases moved away from the island to become potters in other towns and islands such as Lesvos. Today there are still many who practice the art of ceramics, just as their fathers and grandfathers have. The workshops are located in Vathy, Kamares, Platyialos, Cheronissos and Pharos, but there are shops where the ceramics are sold all over the island. In Kamares I lived in a house owned by an old man named Markos who was a potter. He had a kiln on the roof and a potters wheel in the house that he pumped with a pedal to turn. My sister was an apprentice to him for a couple summers and through him developed a love for ceramics. Markos made pottery until his hands became paralized and a few years later he died. His house is now a restaurant. Sadly this is the case with many of the old potters and there are only a handful now creating, but they still use the traditional tools and except for some embellishments, the art has not changed all that much in the last few thousand years. The clay is still dug from the surrounding hills, the wheels are in most cases powered by foot and the kilns still fueled with wood. A visit to Sifnos would not be complete without some local pottery. Be sure to visit the shop of Andonis Kalogirou in

Japan Times story about Ibaraki Museum with more photos This story was first published in Daruma Magazine Issue #40, Fall 2003 Story by ROBERT YELLIN for Daruma Magazine (#40, Fall 2003) On this beautiful planet, full of joy and woe as I write, Japan has without doubt the largest number of art museums devoted solely to pottery-over 500 museums I've heard. That's a lot of beauty, or not, to take in. Almost all major and minor potting centers, and some non-potting locales, have one museum either publicly or privately owned. Some museums are devoted to the collections of individuals, such as the splendid porcelain Toguri Collection in Shibuya, while others trace the history of the clay arts in a particular area, like the Okayama Prefecture Bizen Ceramic Museum (Japanese only). Some are potter's homes turned into museums, the splendid Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Museum in Kyoto (Japanese only) being a fine example. It's a must stop for anyone passing through Kyoto.

Islamic Art (continued) Part VII: Pottery A young potter in Cairo, Egypt. ARAMCO World Jan. - Feb., 1982 Pottery has a long history in the Middle East. Potters used fine clay and usually formed dishes, pots, bowls, and pitchers on a potter's wheel . Then they put on a glaze (paint) . They put the pottery into a kiln (a very hot oven for pottery) and let the pottery bake and dry. The boy on the right is using a traditional potter's wheel which he kicks with one foot as he forms the clay. Muslim potters decorated their work with designs, calligraphy, and pictures. The finest pieces were made for the royal court (the king, his family and important people in the palace) and for the homes of the wealthy. Below are some examples of ceramics (pottery). Look at the designs, calligraphy, and pictures. Ceramic dish from Iran. - Saitama Univ. A 10th century plate from Iran decorated with Arabic (Kufi-style) script. - Saitama Univ. "I have been fascinated by clay since early childhood and have been a potter and ceramic sculptor for many years, a craft which has inevitably led me to explore what other potters have done through the ages. That is how I became interested in the preservation and restoration of ethnographic ceramics. Since living in the southwestern US I have been specializing in restoration of American Indian pottery, prehistoric, historic and contemporary. I also have extensive experience on restoration of Pre-Columbian, African and Asian ceramic antiquities.
When a ceramic object arrives in my studio for restoration, the task can vary from simple cleaning and gluing to major reconstruction of missing areas and concealment of cracks. The degree of restoration is at the option of the client. I use only reversible bonding materials, fillers and paints that will not deleteriously affect the surface of undamaged areas surrounding the repair, the aim being to recapture the visual integrity of the object, yet with an eye to the future when another conservator might want to handle the object differently".
...before and after... Estimates:
I can give you an approximate estimate (plus or minus 20%) for the restoration of your collectable ceramic item from detailed photos plus a description of the item and restoration desired. Please include in the description the size and provenance of your piece.
