Postpartum depression linked with preteen violence

Print version: page 13 The children of mothers who experience depression up to three months after giving birth are at greater risk than other children for exhibiting serious violent behavior as 11-year-olds, according to a new study in APA's Developmental Psychology (Vol. 39, No. 6). Participating children with mothers who experienced postpartum depression and at least one later episode of depression were four times more likely to act out violently and nine times as likely to use weapons such as bricks and bats in confrontations with other children and adults. For the study, psychologist Dale Hay, PhD, of Cardiff University in Wales and her collaborators followed 132 South London families for 12 years. They assessed the self-reported mental health of the mothers through the Clinical Interview Schedule, a structured interview used to identify mood and other disorders. When children reached their 11th birthday, researchers assessed their psychological functioning and problem behaviors using a battery of tests including the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment, a structured Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition)-based diagnostic interview and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, which measures a child's problem behaviors from the perspective of the child, the mother and the class teacher. While many of the children who exhibited clinically significant levels of violence at age 11 had been raised by mothers who had postpartum depression, maternal depression that occurred only later in the child's development did not significantly correlate with violent acting out.

Help for Families suffering from Postpartum Depression Hi. My name is Therese. I'm a nurse who has worked with Mothers and infants on an OB unit since 1983. We never spoke of PPD to new moms. In 1993 I gave birth to my 3rd child. It was at that time I had my first experience with Postpartum Depression (PPD). It was a terrifying experience for me as well as for my family. To begin, I lost all feelings towards my new baby, my other children, my husband, and myself. I felt that I had no purpose in life and that I was the only one who was experiencing these feelings and that they would never end. However, that was not the case. I found assistance through the help of a local PPD support group. It was because of the support of that group that I have taken over as facilitator of the Depression after Delivery support group in COLUMBUS, OHIO. The Central Ohio Depression after Delivery Group is a volunteer, non-profit group, comprised of women who are currently suffering or have recovered from PPD. We meet in Northwest Columbus. Where can you turn for help?
Ten days after delivery, Katie Ford started having violent images of the baby and experiencing overwhelming fear and anxiety that something would happen to the baby (pictured). By Leah Hope May 21, 2004 Some local hospitals have cut postpartum depression support groups and a congressional bill designating more research on the disorder is stuck in a house sub-committee. Some call it the "baby blues" but postpartum depression is a serious condition in which new mothers are overwhelmed by feelings of depression and anxiety. In extreme cases, it's led some mothers to suicide and others to take the life of their own children. Now, an effort is underway to educate and support the women and families facing postpartum depression.

Baby Blues and Postpartum Depression For many women, the days after birth are filled with a lot of mood changes. Some women find they feel weepy without any definite reason. Some women notice a change in their appetites. A few women notice they cannot sleep even when very tired; others may feel like sleeping much more than before. In the first weeks after birth, lots of women speak of feeling overwhelmed with the work of caring for a baby. Some women say they felt their lives would never return to a normal routine. All of these feelings and changes are normal. They are sometimes called the baby blues. They are part of the first few days and weeks after birth for many new mothers. These feelings can be caused by rapid changes in your body after birth. The "baby blues" also come from seeing the kind of responsibility that a parent has. Even when you have thought a lot about caring for a baby, the reality of what a job that is does not really hit most parents until the first few days at home. The baby blues may be eased by limiting what you do - giving yourself time to get used to this new job, just taking care of yourself and your baby and getting as much rest as possible. Often, that is easier to say than do. Taking care of a baby is a 24 hour a day job. One new mother said, "On a good day with my baby, I found time to brush my teeth." That gives you some idea of how full your days will be in the first weeks.

'Baby Blues' vs.
Postpartum Depression After having a baby, most women have mood swings. One minute they feel happy, the next minute they start to cry. They may feel a little depressed, have a hard time concentrating, lose their appetite or find that they can't sleep well even when the baby is asleep. These symptoms usually start about 3 to 4 days after delivery and may last several days. These symptoms are commonly referred to as the "baby blues" and are considered a normal part of early motherhood and usually go away within 10 days after delivery. However, when women have more severe symptoms or symptoms that last longer it is called "postpartum depression.” Postpartum depression is an illness, like diabetes or heart disease. It can be treated with therapy, support networks and medicines such as antidepressants. Article by Laura Nittolo, RN, BSN, Young Children and Family Programs
