    Early History
There is little direct filiation between the Portuguese of today and the early tribes who inhabited this region, although the Portuguese long considered themselves descendants of the Lusitanians, a Celtic people who came to the area after 1,000 B.C. The Lusitanians had their stronghold in the Serra da Estrela. Under Viriatus (2d cent. B.C. ) and under Sertorius (1st cent. B.C. ), they stoutly resisted the Romans (see Lusitania ). Other tribes, such as the Conii in Algarve, submitted more readily. Julius Caesar and Augustus completed the Roman conquest of the area, and the province of Lusitania thrived. Roman ways were adopted, and it is from Latin that the Portuguese language is derived. At the beginning of the 5th cent.

This book is one of those books that makes you wonder why you bother with fiction. Fletcher has created such brilliant characterizations, and his writing is so witty and fine, that it is a sensual pleasure to read. This kind of book is why one bothers to read at all; truly lovely.

Dial up $14.95 or NetZero Internet Service $9.95 SCOUTING IN PORTUGAL FEDERACAO ESCUTISTA DE PORTUGAL SCOUT FEDERATION OF PORTUGAL In Portugal, scouting started in 1911. Many scouting associations appeared. However, only two of them made it through: Unido dos Adueiros de Portugal (which became extinct in 1930) and The Associacion dos Escoteiros de Portugal (AEP), still operational. CNE is another Scouting organization that is active today. The Catholic Church is the sponsor of this association In 1922. The International Eucharistic Congress was taking place in Rome, Italy. Taking part of it, was the Braga Archbishop, D. Manuel Vieira de Matos with Dr. Avelino Gonzalves, his Secretary. The Italian Catholic Scouts did a great job serving in the Congress and giving it a youthful touch. The Archbishop was so impressed, that he asked his Secretary: "Can't we have them here, too?" As soon as they got back to Braga, the work started, and on 27 May 1923, the Braga Local Authorities approved the "Corpo de Scouts Catolicos Portugueses". The next November the Portuguese Government ratifies the movement and approves the Statutes. The Corpo Nacional de Escutas had been founded, the name was changed later. The CNE grew up fast and determined. By February 1925 the "Flor de Lis" first issue is launched, the official magazine. In 1926 the first National Camp takes place in Aljubarrota; and two years later, the second one takes place in Cacia (near Aveiro). In 1929 the CNE sends a contingent of 26 Scouts to the III World Jamboree being recognized by the International Bureau. Since then the CNE has not missed an international meeting.

Roman ways were adopted, and it is from Latin that the Portuguese language is derived. At the beginning of the 5th cent. A.D. , the whole Iberian Peninsula was overrun by Germanic invaders; the Visigoths eventually established their rule, but in the north the Suevi established a kingdom that endured until late in the 6th cent., when they were absorbed by the Visigoths. Present-day Algarve was part of the Byzantine Empire during the 6th and 7th cent. In 711 the Visigoths were defeated by the Moors , who conquered the whole peninsula except for Asturias and the Basque country. Muslim culture and science had a great impact, especially in the south. Religious toleration was practiced, but a large minority converted to Islam.

    Marrano Customs

From the Golden Age of Discovery to the Inquisition Portugese Jewry went from the heights of wealth and success to the depths of anguish and despair. The history of Portugese Jewry is like that of many other places, where success and sadness go hand in hand. Walking along Marrano communities can still be found practicing Jewish rituals behind closed doors, fear of persecutions still looming.
    Early History
Legends say that Jews first came to the Iberian peninsula during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar in the 6 th century BCE or maybe even beforehand during the reign of King Solomon in 900s BCE. Jews lived and remain active in social and commercial life of the peninsula during the Visigoth and Muslim periods of occupation 5 th th century C.E. Several important Jewish communities were already active when the kingdom of Portugal was founded in the 12 th Tensions arose between the Jewish community, who choose to remain faithful to their religion, and the local clergy and middle/lower classes. The clergy wanted to invoke restrictions of the Lateran Council against the Jews, but King Dinis (1279-1235) resisted and reassured the Jews that they did not have to pay tithes to the church.
