83. Demography Of India - Geography Of India, Indian Demography

http://www.indianchild.com/demography_of_india.htm
Demography of India
Demography of India INDIA IS A COUNTRY of great diversity with a wide range of landform types, including major mountain ranges, deserts, rich agricultural plains, and hilly jungle regions. Indeed, the term Indian subcontinent aptly describes the enormous extent of the earth's surface that India occupies, and any attempt to generalize about its physiography is inaccurate. Diversity is also evident in the geographical distribution of India's ethnic and linguistic groups. In ancient times, the major river valleys of the Indo-Gangetic Plain of South Asia were among the great cradles of civilization in Asia, as were the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in West Asia and the Huang He (Yellow River) in East Asia. As a result of thousands of years of cultural and political expansion and amalgamation, contemporary India has come to include many different natural and cultural regions. The Himalayas (and the nations of Nepal and Bhutan) form India's northern frontier with China. Pakistan borders India to the west and Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) to the east. Although both were formerly part of the British Indian Empire, India and Pakistan became separate countries in 1947 and East Pakistan became independent Bangladesh in 1971. The boundaries of the Indian polity are not fully demarcated because of regional ethnic and political disputes and are the source of occasional tensions. When the 1991 national census was taken, India's population was approximately 846.3 million. The annual population growth rate from 1981 to 1991 was 2 percent. Accounting for only 2.4 percent of the world's landmass, India is home to 16 percent of the world's population. Every sixth person in the world in the early 1990s was an Indian. It is generally assumed that India's population will surpass the 1 billion mark some time before the next census in 2001. In July 1995, the population was estimated at 936.5 million.

Population of Virginia
Virginia has a diversity of people, people who came from different places and cultures. People who were "native" to the area when the Europeans arrived were not all the same; Virginia's "Indians" spoke different languages and lived different lifestyles. The earliest European settlers were also from different cultures. Some were poor men looking for a steady wage from the Virginia Company. Others were "gentlemen," venture capitalists who adventured their person and risked their health in the new colony as well as their wealth.
Native Americans Preparing for a Feast
Source: Indians of North America - Theodore De Bry Copper Plate Engravings Those Virginians who are related to the early English colonists are proud to identify their genealogical links to the Randolphs, the Carters, the Lees - and some have a connection even to the original residents, the original First Families of Virginia. Numerous FFV's today, especially those in the Bolling family, can trace their ancestry back to the son of Pocahontas and John Rolfe.
That connection to Pocahontas affected the implementation of de jure (legal) racial discrimination in the 1920's. Racially-biased Virginia officials tried to classify all Virginians with "one drop" of non-white blood as "colored," but 20th Century FFV's with a family connection to the most famous Native American from Virginia complicated that approach.

Basic concepts of population studies, demographic perspectives, future trends, and population issues are discussed. We identify what population events are occurring, why they are occurring, and haw we are coping with them. What are we doing to shape the future of demographic events? We explain future trends in population and discuss population projections are used by non-geographers. In addition to basic concepts, demographic events occurring at various geographic scales, and future trends in population, some attention is given to demographic analysis in social policy and political planning. Geography is an extremely versatile subject covering a broad area of knowledge. From its early origin as a subject concerned with the description of the Earth, Geography has branched into several sub-fields. This course will look into the development and scope of geography from ancient times to its diversification in the late Nineteenth and early part of the Twentieth Century when modern Geography was born, to its present status as a major field of study. The course will focus on Geography theories and concepts and the development of different approaches to the study of Geography. It is expected that on completion of the course students will have a clearer view of what Geography is, the principal spheres of geographical interest and different techniques and methods employed in geographic study.Assessment

    Introduction.
The Demography HomePage is part of an initiative to identify, document, and provide simple access to demographic information concerning The United States of America. This part describes CIESIN's data holdings and related information. This HomePage consists of a series of cascading hypertext links providing access to national data resources, on-line supporting documentation (codebooks, data dictionaries, citations), and possibly extraction tools for data access, and you may connect to an anonymous ftp service for data file retrieval. The information contained on this page is organized by major data resource. The source documents will be indexed, allowing for full and/or paragraph text searches. In addition, this page also provides connectivity to many world wide web and gophers sites listed and grouped in four distinct lists. By clicking on the highlighted (or underlined) sites you can connect to those services listed directly. Clicking on this symbol [ ] will reveal the primary information sources for the current viewing page. Finally, at the bottom of this home-page, "buttons" are provided for the users's convenience, for example; button #2 connects directly to CIESIN's Home Page "Information for a Changing World", or try button #1, CIESIN's navigational tool.

    About Us
The Population Research Center at NORC and the University of Chicago, now in its 21st year, is an interdisciplinary research center designed to facilitate high-quality population research conducted by its researchers economists, sociologists, and other population scientists. From the early 1940s through the early 1970s, Chicago had an outstanding population group in sociology under the leadership of Philip Hauser, Donald Bogue, and Evelyn Kitagawa. This center of activity was revived in 1983 with a new P-30 Population Center. Since then, the staff of population researchers has grown from twelve to 39. Growth within the Population Research Center has come from researchers in economics, psychology, business, public policy, medicine, and social services administration. The spread into related fields has diversified funding opportunities, with grants coming from foundations and a broader range of Federal Government sources. This diversification in part reflects a broadening in all population centers and reflects a consistent trend at Chicago. The PRC has always worked at the margins of what was considered to be traditional demography, and as a result our center has helped expand the domain of the field. For example, we have placed less emphasis on the demographic methods featured in other population centers than on statistical methods adopted from the field of labor economics, including event-history analysis, and we have stressed the importance of understanding selection bias and censoring. We have also researched determinants of fertility decisions and their dynamics, timing, and spacing rather than more traditional fertility analyses. Though the research occasionally may have appeared to be on the periphery of demography, over time it has helped to redefine the domain more broadly. We have not been alone in that effort, but it has been a central focus for the Chicago PRC and it continues to be so.
