Cybergeography We used to live in a local world that was divided into geographically demarcated units, like home, office, street, cafe, train, rugby field, or dancing. The internet age seems to have blurred any geographical structure. Yet, the virtual reality of the internet has its own particular geography. It is a geography which is built out of networks and nodes which transport information flows which are created and controlled on special locations. Cyberspace as such is no tangible space, but the information processes which constitute this space are embedded in the local world with brick-and-mortar rooms and hard-wired computers. The information space of the internet is constituted by connections between computers and networks of computers. So internet is not a monolytic or placeless 'cyberspace', but rather a series of new technologies that are used by millions of people on different places of the local world. The technical geography refers to the telecommunications infrastructure of the internet, the connections between the computers that organize internet traffic (routers), and the distribution of the internet's broad bandwidth. Through a myriad of possible routes every node of the network is connected to every other node. The USA used to play a central role in the connections between the countries. The technical structure of the internet was highly concentrated round the USA, but this hegemony has been diminished by the emergence of new powerful nodes (hubs and routers) in other areas of the world, particularly in Europe. The strategic differences between the countries are declining. The highly USA-concentrated structure of the technical geography is gradually replaced by a technical dependency between the metropoles of the world.

the demography and geography of rural minorities
Minorities comprise a growing percentage of the U.S. nonmetro and metro population. Absolute numbers for all groups increased during the 1990s, but because non-Hispanic Whites grew at the slowest rate, their proportion of the total U.S. population decreased. Hispanics and Asians are the fastest growing minority groups in the United States. Their higher growth rates result from changes in U.S. immigration laws in the mid-1960s that favored immigration from non-European countries. In addition, because many immigrants tend to be relatively young, they are more likely to marry and/or have children. The Native American population had above-average birth rates during the 1990s, but their population growth between 1990 and 2000 (as well as between 1980 and 1990) also resulted from greater numbers of them recording their heritage on the Census. Even though non-Hispanic Blacks grew at twice the rate of non-Hispanic Whites in the past decade ( table 1 ), their patterns of population growth, aging, and household size in metro and nonmetro areas resemble those of Whites rather than those of fast-growing Hispanic and Asian residents.

Population, Urban and Rural Geography Staff I Undergraduate Papers I Graduate Papers I Staff Publications The Department of Geography at the University of Waikato has had a strong interest in Population and Urban Geography from its earliest days and has played a major role in developing the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as New Zealand’s leading centre for teaching and research in international migration and population studies. In 1979 the University established a Population Studies Centre in the Faculty and students interested in Population and Urban Geography may strengthen their degrees in this field by taking some of the papers co-ordinated by the staff of the Population Studies Centre. The population and urban papers taught in the Department of Geography have always emphasized the interdisciplinary and applied nature of population and urban studies and have sought to balance important international and local perspectives. The Department of Geography has major strengths in international migration studies and has been very successful in securing competitive research funding in this field from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST), Asia 2000, the Health Research Council and the New Zealand Immigration Service. An international migration research group has two full-time research fellows and a number of part-time research assistants. There are opportunities for students to be employed as temporary research assistants from time to time.

I The BSocSc Programme I I Level 1 Papers I Level 2 Papers I Level 3 Papers I Population problems are among the most serious challenges to human destiny for the twenty-first century. The developed and developing countries are facing contrasting population problems. While developed countries are experiencing below replacement level fertility, developing countries are still grappling with reducing fertility. This has implications for environment, employment, work and family, health, population distribution, urbanisation, migration, old age security and refugee movement. It is thus important that integrated approaches to population and economic problems be advanced by population research, and that policy makers and planners pay serious attention to population trends, their causes and their implications. The Waikato graduate programme in Demography is administered by the Department of Sociology and Social Policy. This programme emphasises an integrated approach to population studies in a interdisciplinary context. Students have opportunities to work on individual directed studies and to undertake research for a Masters or higher degree on a population-related subject. The programme is of interest to graduates who seek careers in research, teaching, policy-making, administration and evaluation in central, regional or local government service, in international and community organisations and in the private sector.

Objectives of Course This is an introduction to the study of population (demography), and an introduction to the use of demographic data, primarily from census sources. Students will learn the major trends in population dynamics, the factors associated with birth and death rates, and the importance of both demographic characteristics and migration on population distribution patterns. I will present general concepts and models of demographic patterns. We will also have short student presentations of project results, so that we can see patterns among the states. Upon completion of the course, students will be comfortable with basic two-variable comparisons of demographic data from census and vital statistics sources. Friday classes will meet in computer lab, McClure 214A. Text Yaukey, David and D.L. Anderton
