  • Population Geography is the study of spatial variations in distribution, density, composition and growth of human numbers on earth.
  • It is important because it links all other aspects of geography together.
Demography
  • Demography is the study of population characteristics.
  • It is significant because
  • There are more people living today than any other time in history.
  • There's been a population explosion since World War 2.
  • There is an inverse relationship between population growth and resources i.e. there are too many people in places without enough resources to support them and too few people in areas with over abundant resources

The Program in Population Research is a lively center of demographic research, functioning as an intellectual communications node for demographic research in Northern California while maintaining strong national and international ties. Its mission is to facilitate and conduct research in demography and to support teaching and research responsibilities of academic programs. The long-term goal of the program is the establishment of a major center in mathematical and technical demography directly relevant to substantive and theoretical areas in anthropology, economics, history, sociology, and international relations. The program, chaired by Professor Ronald Lee (Economics and Demography), is closely affiliated with the Department of Demography, and sponsors the Demography Brown Bag Colloquium and the BACPOP colloquium.
Crossing Borders: Area Studies and the New Geographies. Area studies has been challenged by globalization in its myriad forms. Transnational networks, linkages, and flows permeate and reshape state, national, and regional boundaries. This program, funded by the Ford Foundation, acknowledges the transformative power of such global forces but also questions their limits and consequences. The program's three goals are these: to specify the implications of globalization for area studies and social theory; to build upon the particular strengths of area studies fields while responding to their silences and lacunae; and to foster innovative dissertation research designs to enable the next generation of scholars to better grasp local - global interactions and transnational processes.

International Journal of Population Geography Aim and Scope IJPG aims to be the leading English-language research journal in the field. It intends to:
    • Inform population geographers of the best research in the sub-discipline through its primary research articles. It will also carry articles of interest to population planners and practitioners and the wider community of social scientists interested in population research.
Promote and further enhance the international standing of population geography through the exchange of views on what constitutes best practice in population research.
Facilitate debate on issues of policy relevance and encourage the widest possible discussion and dissemination of the applications of research in population geography.
Review and evaluate the significance for population geography of recent research findings in the wider field of population studies and the broader social sciences in general, and provide an international platform where researchers can discuss the future course of the sub-discipline.

Population scientists from the Battelle Institute's Center for Public Health Research and Evaluation (Seattle), Western Washington University (Bellingham, WA), and University of Victoria , (British Columbia, Canada) also participate in Center activities. Our affiliates are known for their research on biodemography, health, international demography, migration, inequality, family demography, and quantitative methodology. Descriptions of the active research projects at the Center can be found under Current Research Projects The Center provides research support services and educational opportunities to its members through its graduate student, postdoctoral and mid-career professional training; computer lab and services; library collection and services; working paper series; and weekly research seminar.

Austria ... Children Demography is a broad social science discipline concerned with the study of human populations, primary with respect to their size, their structure and their development. Demographers deal with the collection, presentation and analysis of data relating to the basic life-cycle events and experiences of people: birth, marriage, divorce, household and family formation, employment, ageing, migration and death. The discipline emphasises empirical investigation of population processes, including the conceptualisation and measurement of these processes and the study of their determinants and consequences. The field of demography is also concerned with the broader nature of social and economic change, and with the impact of demographics change on the natural environment.
