      Introduction
Late at night sometime in Februari, Kalle Hasselström and Jon Åslund (that is us, we, the authors) were sitting with a programming assignment due for demonstration at nine the following morning. It was assignment number four in our Syntax Analysis course and we were pretty tired with it. The last assignment, on the other hand, seemed like much more fun, because you were allowed to do pretty much whatever you wanted as long as it involved lexical and syntactical analysis. So instead of finishing the fourth assignment, we started making up some great ideas for the fifth, the kind you only conceive of when you really should be asleep. A few weeks earlier we had discovered a number of truly fascinating programming languages, such as Java2k , Sorted! , Brainfuck and Malbolge , and we wanted to make our own. We have no idea why, but that night we were also thinking about Shakespeare in general, and Shakespearian insults in particular and three hours later we had come up with this amazing idea: the Shakespeare Programming Language, SPL. This is the documentation of the language and how we made it.

Dec 19, 2003, 9:48 AM Post #1 of 5 (348 views) Shortcut Question about pop and shift Can't Post I have a script that reads a text file of items and puts them in a pipe delimted format... example: text file- bob sue john text file- The problem I have is if someone adds blank spaces or lines: text file- bob sue john text file- So I came up with another idea - what about using pop and shift in this manner: text file- bob sue john text file- Then doing pop(@text); and shift(@text) to get rid of the comment lines. Is this a good idea? Ps: Here is how I read the text file and do what I need to do with it $filter = join "",@check; close(FILTER); This makes the script more "user friendly" so that co-workers can simply modify a text file of names instead of having to worry about pipes and escaping special characters, etc. Is using: foreach ($Body =~ /($filter)/) a good way of doing this? Would some other method be better/faster/more stable?

    COW (june 2001)
COW is another "environment" language like Bla, but is much more radical in unifying all possible programming language constructs into one (the environment). Extremely tiny language definition covers classes, objects, modules, functions/methods function-environments, scopes, (recursive) lambda's, tuples, lists, arrays, monitors, futures, bags etc. etc.

    Modifying a Program State
This chapter focuses on dbx usage and commands that change your program or change the behavior of your program as compared to running it without dbx . It is important to understand which commands might make modifications to your program. The chapter is divided into the following sections:
    Basic Concepts
    Using Commands
    Basic Concepts
Your application might behave differently when run under dbx . Although dbx strives to minimize its impact on the child, you should be aware of the following:
    • You may forget to take out a -C or disable RTC. Just having the RTC support library librtc.so loaded into a program can cause the program to behave differently.
    • Your dbx initialization scripts may have some environment variables set that you've forgotten about. The stack base starts at a different address when running under dbx . This is also different based on your environment and contents of argv[] , forcing local variables to be allocated a bit differently. If they're not initialized, they will get different random numbers. This problem can be detected via runtime checking.
    • The program does not initialize malloc
    • If the program references an uninitialized memory location via a bad pointer; a situation similar to the previous one. This problem can be detected via runtime checking.

In this lecture, we will make repeated use of three key transformations used in building software: representation independence, switching representations, and CPS. We begin by CPSing our interpreter: ((var? M) (k (lookup M env))) ((app? M) (Eval (app-rator M) env (lambda (f) (Eval (app-rand M) env (lambda (a) (Apply f a k)))))) We then make it representation independent, ((var? M) (Pop k (lookup M env))) ((app? M) (Eval (app-rator M) env (Push-app-f M env k))) where (define Push-app-f (lambda (M env k) (lambda (f) (Eval (app-rand M) env (lambda (a) (Apply f a k)) and (define Pop (lambda (k v) (k v))) Then in Push-app-f we rewrite the last procedure to (lambda (a) (Push-app-a f k)) with (define Push-app-a (lambda (f k) (lambda (a) (Apply f a k)))) Now in Push-app-f , which now looks like this, (define Push-app-f (lambda (M env k) (lambda (f) (Eval (app-rand M) env (lambda (a) (Push-app-a f k)))) we replace the lambda with (list 'app-f M env k) to get (define Push-app-f (lambda (M env k) (list 'app-f M env k))) and Push-app-a is modified similarly, so we assume that all continuations have distinguishing tags.

    proc (x,i) : p convert to procedure
Produces a procedure corresponding to the value of x, but fails if x does not correspond to a procedure. If x is the string name of an operator, i specifies the number of arguments: 1 for unary (prefix), 2 for binary (infix), and 3 for ternary. proc(x,0) produces the built-in function named x even if the global identifier having that name has been assigned another value. proc(x,0) fails if x is not the name of a function. Default: i 1 See also:
    pull (L) : x pull from list
Produces the rightmost element of L and removes it from L, but fails if L is empty. See also: , and
    push (L,x1,x2,...,xn) : L push onto list
Pushes x1, x2, ... onto the left end of L. Values are pushed in order from left to right, so xn becomes the first (leftmost) value on L. push(L) with no second argument pushes a null value onto L. See also: , and

Securing POP mail access in MacOSX
More Articles I always worry about my website. Security is serious stuff, and you really can't be too careful. I don't enable telnet, rlogin and use long, complicated passwords with ssh and so on. I use a shared webserver ( http://www.interland.com ) that allows me virtual root access, and I fortunately don't have to worry about things like sendmail; Interland keeps on top of that sort of thing for me. But one glaring hole is POP access for mail. I could install pop3s but then that's just one more thing to keep up with for security patches, and because that's not part of the standard services Interland provides, it would be mine to maintain. Instead, I decided to tunnel POP through ssh. This doesn't require changing anything at the server - it still thinks it is just running plain old POP3 and has no idea it is running over a secure tunnel. I can set up the tunnel without using sudo or root, which is more convenient. There are some disadvantages to this approach. Whle it is possible to set up ssh to use more advanced authentication like Kerberos, it isn't at all easy, and requires changes at the server end that you might not be able to do. The default authentication (public/private keypairs) is a bit easier to set up (see

My own private Noise Pop By Lynn Rapoport I'VE HEARD QUITE to squabble over, the inarguable "we like these bands." However, nobody seems to use "noise pop" to describe a sound anymore, and maybe nobody would know what was meant, unless the user added a qualifier like "circa '94" for that soupçon of lip-curling pretentiousness. And I never really noticed there being less noise, pop, or any other type of rock and roll in February than in January, May, or late July, but maybe my rock elders fought that battle so I wouldn't have to, and kids today don't know how lucky they are to have so much Noise Pop.

We work on the problem of the safe design of real-time control systems. This area is touching as well on control theory as on computer science, and the application domains are typically safety-critical systems, as in transportation (avionics, trains), production, medical or energy production systems. There is a need for methods and formal models that can be implemented in effective, automated assitance tools, targeted to specialists of the applications. We contribute to propose solutions all along the design flow, between specification and implementation: we devellop techniques for the specification and automated generation of safe real-time executives for control systems.
