Befunge programming language
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Befunge is a stack-based A stack is a data structure that works on the principle of Last In First Out (LIFO). This means that the last item put on the stack is the first item that can be taken off, like a physical stack of plates. A stack-based computer system is one that is based on the use of stacks, rather than being register based. The two main operations applicable to a stack are:
  • push : an item is put on top of the stack, increasing the stack size by one. As stack size is usually limited, this may provoke a stack overflow if the maximum size is exceeded.
  • pop : the top item is taken from the stack, decreasing stack size by one. In the case where there was no top item (i.e. the stack was empty), a stack underflow occurs.

Consequently, usability is rarely a high priority for such languages. The usual aim is to remove or replace conventional language features while still maintaining a language that is Turing-complete. The earliest esoteric language was Intercal, designed in 1972 with the stated aim of being as fundamentally unlike any existing language as possible. Other noteworthy esoteric languages are (for a more complete list, see List of esoteric programming languages):

Hi, what's the general consensus on using pop-up windows for the display of relatively short, specific bits of information. I think they are cool, but I've heard that some people use software that stops the windows from appearing because they are used so often for ads. I just think that some of the information on my site looks better in a smaller, centrally positioned window - and it maintains a visible presence of the main site in the background. Anyone got any comments?

Kieran Posted on: 2002/02/19 12:11, Click here to view this thread on the forum Allen Heya Kieran,
That question is a tough one to answer. In general, the use of pop-ups should be discouraged. More and more sites use them for ads and so people just see a popup and close it most times. At least that is what "usability stu***s" say.
What I recommend, is using pop-ups as a last means. See if there are other options, then use a pop-up as a last resort. One good use for pop-ups is when you are loading a flash animation or game.
Basically, use pop-ups where it makes sense. I can 99% guarantee you will never see an ad pop-up on HTMLCenter. At least until someone pays us enough so we can all retire on a small island with some models and a T1 line. :)

Hi,
I'm a total beginner at javascript and I need some help.
I made a page with 2 links, if you click on one of the links you get a pop up window with a form. You have to fill in your username and password and confirm. But how can you make js open the page in the same place where the 2 links are (instead of the pop up window).
Hope someone understands what I'm trying to say :)
Thx for helping me out. Posted on: 2004/02/26 06:07, Click here to view this thread on the forum code`poet Can I see a demo? Posted on: 2004/02/29 02:39, Click here to view this thread on the forum curtiss Well, it sounds like you simply need to set an appropriate target for your links. I am not certain exactly what the standard targets are when dealing with pop-ups. However, if you can figure out which target to use, you should be set.
Does anyone know what the standard "target" is for the window that launched the pop-up? It's not "parent", is it? Posted on: 2004/02/29 04:34

Node: yank-pop , Next: ring file , Previous: yank , Up: Kill Ring
yank-pop
After understanding yank , the yank-pop function is easy. Leaving out the documentation to save space, it looks like this: The function is interactive with a small p so the prefix argument is processed and passed to the function. The command can only be used after a previous yank; otherwise an error message is sent. This check uses the variable last-command which is discussed elsewhere. (See copy-region-as-kill The let clause sets the variable before to true or false depending whether point is before or after mark and then the region between point and mark is deleted. This is the region that was just inserted by the previous yank and it is this text that will be replaced. Next the kill-ring-yank-pointer is rotated so that the previously inserted text is not reinserted yet again. Mark is set at the beginning of the place the new text will be inserted and then the first element to which kill-ring-yank-pointer points is inserted. This leaves point after the new text. If in the previous yank, point was left before the inserted text, point and mark are now exchanged so point is again left in front of the newly inserted text. That is all there is to it!

Pop-ups may invade TV programming

by Geoff "Dissonance" Gasior - 11:38 am, November 20, 2002
Despite what must be an overwhelming consensus that pop-up ads are intrusive and annoying, it looks like they may be making their way to a TV near you . Executives refer to the ads as in program product sponsorship, but they're little more than a combination of pop-up and pop-over technology. One example: As an episode of Court TV's program "Forensic Files" plays, a banner rises from the bottom of the screen with the words "Forensic Files Sponsored by Hyundai." A small graphic of a Hyundai car appears next to it. After a few seconds, the banner and graphic disappear. It's less annoying than a Web banner and pretty inconspicuous, given the trend toward news tickers that appear all over news channels these days. If only every program would use these ads in the exact same place, I could just cover up the banner space at the bottom of my TV screen. 34 comments Anonymous Gerbil at 02:17pm on 11/22/2002

Partial Order Programming (Technical Report CSD-870067, December 1987) D. Stott Parker We introduce a programming paradigm in which statements are constraints over partial orders. A partial order programming problem has the form minimize u subject to u1 >= v1 u2 >= v2 ... where u is the goal, and u1 >= v1, ... is a collection of constraints called the program. A solution of the problem is a minimal value for u determined by values for u1,v1, etc. satisfying the constraints. The domain of values here is a partial order, a domain D with ordering relation >=. The partial order programming paradigm has interesting properties:
  • It generalizes mathematical programming, dynamic programming, and computer programming paradigms (logic, functional, and others) cleanly, and offers a foundation both for studying and combining paradigms.

  • Socket Programming With PHP - POP Goes The Weasel ( Page 7 of 9 ) Let's try something a little more advanced. How about a TCP client that connects to a POP3 server to retrieve the total number of messages for a user's mailbox? In order to build such a client, I need to first understand the sequence of commands passed to a POP3 server in order to obtain the message total, and then replicate this sequence in my PHP-based client. The best way to do this is by using a regular telnet client to interact with the server and understand the command sequence - so here goes: $ telnet mail.host 110 Trying 192.168.0.1... Connected to 192.168.0.1. Escape character is '^]'. +OK POP3 mail.host v5.5 server ready USER john +OK User name accepted, password please PASS doe +OK Mailbox open, 72 messages STAT +OK 72 24595628 QUIT +OK Sayonara Connection closed by foreign host.

Exceptions to the programming rules, Part 1
Learn how exception handling has evolved from C to Java
    Summary
Java developers confront many issues when developing Java programs, from achieving portable code to dealing with exceptions. This month, I introduce a two-part series that explores exceptions. In Part 1, you learn about exceptions and how to handle them in C, C++, and Java. Learning how to handle exceptions in various languages gives you an appreciation for why exception handling works the way it does in Java. For a glossary of terms, a list of tips and cautions, new homework, answers to last month's homework, and additional material related to this article, visit the associated study guide 2,900 words; March 1, 2002 By Jeff Friesen Printer-friendly version Mail this to a friend Page 1 of 3 Advertisement part from the simplest programs, programs usually fail. Causes range from coding mistakes to bad user input, to operating system flaws. Regardless of the failure's cause, as a software developer, you're charged with designing programs that can either recover (where the program continues to execute after fixing the failure) or properly shut down (where the program makes every effort to save the user's data before terminating). After all, why should users pay for faulty programs that fail to save data when those programs unexpectedly terminate?

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) Whether it's shoppers in the checkout line sneaking peaks at the National Enquirer or David Letterman poking fun at Britney Spears' quickie marriage, pop culture has become an easy laugh for comics and a cheap ratings-grabber for cable networks. Is it only a matter of time before the broadcast networks turn to the genre as an expansion of its successful foray beyond pricey scripted programming with reality shows? "We just may be at the advent of a new programming genre," says Lauren Zalaznick, president of Trio, which brands itself as a pop culture channel. "It's still real new, and cable does things first, out of economic necessity." Modern-day reality shows emerged with MTV's "The Real World" in 1992, so it could take some time for cable's newfound obsession with all things pop to permeate a mass-audience medium if the genre doesn't burn out by cannibalizing itself with arch self-reference.
