pop music. Secaattin Tanyerli, and Zehra Eren were popular tango singers. In the 1960 s, pop music, rapidly growing all round the world, influenced Turkey.
http://www.mfa.gov.tr/grupc/cj/cja/cjab/music17.htm
POP Music
We do not consider the term "Turkish Pop Music" to be an equivalent of its international meaning of American pop music or British pop music but as something specially Turkish. The first popular music of foreign origin in Turkey was the "Tango". When radio receivers were beginning to become widespread, and with 78 r.p.m. records, the tango was very much in demand. Secaattin Tanyerli, and Zehra Eren were popular tango singers. In the 1960's, pop music, rapidly growing all round the world, influenced Turkey. Songs once sung in their original language started to be sung with Turkish words. Composers such as Fecri Ebcioglu and Sezen Cumhur Onal, began to write Turkish words for foreign popular songs. In time, several professional singers and groups emerged, some of which composed (*) "Original Music" inspired by Turkish folklore. Among the artists of that period are Alpay, Erol Buyukburc, Mogollar, Baris Manco, Cem Karaca, Fikret Kizilok, Esin Afsar . As radio and TV broadcasts developed, pop music gained an important dimension. Seref Canku, father of Dogan Canku of the "Modern Folk Uclusu" (Modern Folk Trio) made invaluable contributions to the Turkish pop music repertoire, and singers and groups using Turkish traditional music themes, began to increase. However, as Turkish pop music gradually reached a higher quality, it came up against a negative effect that was called "Arabesque".

64. USIA, U.S. Society & Values, June 1998 - Conversation With Gary Burton On The U.
THE US pop music SCENE. A Conversation with Gary Burton. A American pop music is steadily gaining fans overseas. Q How do you define pop music ?
http://usinfo.state.gov/journals/itsv/0698/ijse/garyburt.htm
THE U.S. POP MUSIC SCENE
A Conversation with Gary Burton
Popular music in the United States today is a multifaceted mosaic that challenges simple description. In the following interview with Michael J. Bandler, jazz musician-composer-educator Gary Burton, the world's leading vibraphonist, analyzes the current scene and the forces at work. Burton, who has performed around the globe and recorded extensively, is executive vice president of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, an institution whose curriculum is devoted to all forms of contemporary music.
Q: You came along about a generation ago. How would you compare the young musicians of that era with the talent you see these days at Berklee and elsewhere? A: The biggest difference is education, in that the jazz and pop musicians of the Sixties, when I was starting my career, were the very first ones to have a chance to go to music college and learn more about music. The majority of the players were still self-taught, or intuitive, and learned from their experiences on the job more than in an organized academic setting. That began to change by the Seventies, and into the Eighties. Now it's far more common for young up-and-coming musicians to go to school somewhere and learn a lot more about music of different types, and music history, and the nuts and bolts of music, which makes them capable of more versatility and more sophistication in their work. Q: Paula Cole [a leading U.S. pop artist] is an example.

- absolutely the best, complete look at the decade of the 60's. You've read books about the Kennedy's, Johnson, Vietnam, Civil Rights, Jackie Kennedy etc. How about books relating to your favorite music groups like the Beatles, Stones, Doors etc? You've seen the timelines and pop culture content on the Internet. None of it compares to what's coming up - over 2000 book pages, week-by-week - on the decade of the 60's. Look at the news, follow the trends on everything, anything. News of the day including Eisenhower, the Kennedy administration, Johnson and into Nixon. Pop culture like you've never seen - everything from television, movies, pop music, radio. Fascinating trivia. Crazy stories. The ups and downs (I promise more ups). I was suppose to debut this spectacular software book this Spring, but I have one problem... I keep adding content! Being a pop history freak, I hope I can stop adding content and get down to business with formatting, so you can have this... the greatest solute to the 60's ever published. Oh and one other thing, I'll be adding a unique soundtrack. Tell you what that's all about as we get closer to launching! For now, take a look at three sample weeks. Remember, there are over 500 of these, so get ready for a virtual time-machine trip.

Who doesn't remember classic cartoons?
Warner, Disney, MGM, Columbia, Fleischer, Lantz; name a studio, and your eye recalls the images, your brain the actions and personalities of favorite cartoon characters. From Bugs Bunny's hat dance with "El Toro" to Donald Duck's fanny-wagging ballet on the ice, animated images were built to last by their artists and storymen.
Same goes for those animated melodies
No, really: rewatch a cartoon you've seen before, and your ears may well recall the background score before your eyes recall the visuals. Quite a feat for mere accompaniment to be so memorable. You know the tunes of Bugs and the bull, of Donald in winter, almost as if they were written to hold an audience on their own.
And so they were
In truth, the tunes of these old cartoons are memorable because they were the popular music of the 1920s and before: the drinking songs, the minstrel reels, the cultural memories that filled animators' lives behind the screen. Lives that we today have lost touch with; for excepting classic cartoons, yesterday's cultural memories sadly fill today's memory hole.
It's time to reclaim the past. Cartoon music holds a history waiting for us to rediscover, love, hate, and learn from, and that's the goal of this page. Starting with classic songs as we know them from cartoons and cartoon spin-offs, I'll move outward to show you the buried history that they contain: broader cultural significance as seen through vintage sheet music, rare original recordings, bizarre facts and weird old-time cliches.
