Download Adobe Acrobat Reader “The blues had a baby and they called it rock and roll.” For decades now, a particular story of popular music, with rock and the baby boom generation at its core, has grabbed the center of most histories. Similarly, from bluegrass to reggae to hip-hop, there’s often a “golden age” associated with a specific style of music. What accounts for particular moments achieving greatness? Why have certain narratives assumed such power? What effect do these valorizations have on the making, marketing, consumption, or longevity of music? For this year’s Pop Conference, we invite papers from any perspective that look toward a new interpretive synthesis or a better justification of the old one. The hope is that, rather than critiquing the longing for authenticity, participants will suggest alternate viewpoints. Possible topics include, but are by no means limited to, the ideas mentioned above as well as:
  • African-American and Latino perspectives on the “rock” story
  • Putting jazz and classical back into the picture.

January 6th
first off, i am 18 today. now secondly, as you can see, i have almost reached the 1000th mark on this page. i never thought it would get that close. so i thought, hey, maybe people that really like this page (and actually have it bookmarked) could make artwork that say something like "1000 hits" or whatever once i break 1000 and i could post them. maybe, if ya wanted. maybe i'll actually update again one day. [and maybe the idiots that view this site will hate me more than ever now!]
January 2nd
Well, i haven't updated i awhile, but i have decided to actually take away a coupla pages. bascially any page that has to do with me. after all this page is about bashing pop music, not about some loser on a computer

Server will be down for maintenance on 2004-06-11 from about 18:00 to 18:30 UTC. pop music is either an abbreviation of popular music or a term for a sub- genre of it. The subgenre of pop is perhaps the most widely crowd-pleasing form of popular music. As a rule, pop music features simple, memorable melodies with catchy, singalong choruses, and instrumentally features heavy use of synthesiser backing. It is instantly accessible to anyone culturally initiated, even the musically uninitiated. Successful pop music (and successful pop music is usually measured in terms of its commercial success without any pretence to broader artistic goals) is usually performed by charismatic performers who may or may not be musically talented but who look attractive and may dance well. Songwriting and arranging may be performed by anonymous but well-paid producers. Producer Frank Farian briefly experimented with the notion of having one party sing a song, and another lip-sync to it. The result was called Milli Vanilli and was hugely successful, until people discovered what was going on.

About every 20 years, says NPR's Rick Karr, "a new technology comes along and revolutionizes the sound of recorded music, or the economics of the record industry. In the past, those technologies have primarily affected recording studios and record pressing plants but the latest revolution is happening at home."
In homes, for example, like Elizabeth Sharp's Brooklyn loft apartment, where she records music in a six-by-eight-feet cubicle she calls "the Rock Closet." With cardboard and old futons soundproofing the walls, a drum kit, a stack of guitar amps, and an Apple Macintosh as a studio recorder, Sharp can record and mix song tracks for her band, Ill Ease. Just 10 years ago, says Karr, even a studio like this would have cost $50,000 or more. Today, it can be had for the cost of a home computer and less than $1,000 of additional hardware and software.

To most people outside China, Chinese
music falls into three broad categories:
outdated "East is Red" style marches,
classical music with exotic instruments and
strange sounding vocals, or "banned in
Beijing" hard rock with biting political lyrics. This last image remains the most pervasive.
The biggest, best-known music star
outside China is still Cui Jian , the symbol
of the 1989 student demonstrations. His
hard-edged, political lyrics mixed well with the metal and punk influences that typified the Beijing rock music scene. Cui Jian is still a big influencehe played to a huge crowd in New York's central park late summer 1999. And Tang Dynsasty another big Chinese rock band of the 1980s, is still playing (somewhere). But the old days of the Beijing rock scene are gone forever. In their place is a dynamic blend of new Chinese music that mirrors the complexities and contradictions of modern China.

Odin Government Ministries Archive ... Norway in facts and figures
Norwegian pop music
by Tor Marcussen
Any account of popular music In Norway has to begin with a-ha, the only Norwegian band which has achieved resounding international success and has created songs of real quality.
New talent
During the last five years a new generation of musicians and artists has emerged who enjoy being in the limelight and who concentrate unashamedly on the commercial aspect. Parallel to the increasing number of "soap" stars and programme leaders on a multitude of TV-channels have appeared artists who have no objection to dressing the part, to being stars. There has been a positive change in mentality This has admittedly produced a number of bands and artists who have embarrassingly little musical talent, but who nevertheless have made a try. The most important thing is that those who do have real talent are not afraid of being pop stars and no longer find it an embarrassment. A pop singer like the image and clothes- conscious Espen Lind would have been unthinkable ten years ago. But a-ha was not just a one-hit wonder band. Shortly after came other songs like "The Sun Always Shines On TV" and "Manhattan Skyline", now classics. a-ha achieved worldwide fame and toured Japan Australia, the USA and Europe. All this is now history, but a-ha still retains its popularity. For after a six-year break the three decided that they had unfinished work to do and started afresh in 1999. They performed at a concert in connection with the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo and once again entered the recording studios. The result was the album "Minor Earth, Major Sky; which topped the European hit lists in 2000. They returned as a much more confident and mature live band and held award-winning concerts in Germany. Over one million sold copies of their comeback album indicate that we can expect more high quality pop music from a-ha.

Bobby Hatfield died November 5, 2003. He was 63. For nearly four decades, the Righteous Brothers defined the essence of "blue-eyed soul." Together and as solo artists, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield reached generations of fans with their unmistakable, heartfelt vocal style. From their 1965 chart-topping success with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" to 1990's surprise rediscovery of "Unchained Melody," the Righteous Brothers endured and thrived as legendary talents. What explains the duo's evergreen appeal? Perhaps it's the raw emotion which Medley and Hatfield conveyed as singers. There's also the knack they had for choosing timeless, immaculately crafted songs to record. "Unchained Melody," featured in the film 'Ghost,' became a platinum single in early '91 when the duo's newly recorded version sold more than one million copies. The song also earned them a Grammy nomination in the category of "Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group with Vocal." The re-recorded "Unchained Melody" was included on "

"Providing Excellence in Entertainment Since 1970" Daryl Hall and John Oates
Daryl Hall John Oates Beginning with their first hit in 1974 and lasting well into the '80s, Daryl Hall and John Oates ' smooth, catchy take on Philly soul brought them enormous success, including six number one singles and six platinum albums. ' music was remarkably well-constructed and produced; at their best, their songs were filled with strong hooks and melodies that adhered to soul traditions without being a slave to them by incorporating elements of new wave and hard rock. On their first records – "Whole Oates" (1972), " Abandoned Luncheonette " (1973), "War Babies" (1974) – the duo were establishing their sound, working with producers like Arif Mardin and Todd Rundgren and removing much of their folk influences. At the beginning of 1974, the duo relocated from Philadelphia to New York. After they moved to RCA in 1975, the duo landed on its successful mixture of soul, pop and rock, scoring a Top Ten single with "Sara Smile." The success of "Sara Smile" prompted the re-release of "She's Gone," which rocketed into the Top Ten as well. Released in the summer of 1976, "Bigger than the Both of Us" was only moderately successful upon its release. The record took off in early 1977, when "Rich Girl" became the duo's first number one single.
