[E-mail Me] More Useless Pages: Flaming Pop Tarts While rumours abound on the internet that pop tarts apparently burst into flames when left in a toaster, I'd never actually witnessed the event first hand. Luckily, it just so happened that I came upon a toaster that was otherwise destined for the trash. I also managed to find a less-stingy, more-employed friend, willing to supply the pop tarts. We set up the toaster in a sand pit in my backyard and put two pop tarts in the slots. The toaster was set to its highest setting, and the button thingy taped down with duct tape. I set up my camera to record the events. After about 5 minutes of waiting, smoke began to spew forth from the pop tarts: Click to see footage [Hi-speed] [Modem] After a solid 5 minutes of heavy (and quite noxious) smoking and worrying what the neighbours would think, the flames finally appeared. I was expecting more of an explosion, and was rather disappointed by the lackthereof. Not to fret though, the flames were quite high and we noted that pop tarts burn very clean. Once we noticed the toaster seemed to be on fire too, we ceased the experiment. The toaster needed to cool off before we could inspect the results...and what better way to cool off a burning electrical appliance than dousing it in water?

Nonstop Pop August 25, 2003 Happy Shopper One of the bummer things about having a regular job-type-situation at the moment is that I no longer get to shop at the local thrift store during the day, when the crowds are sparser (read: competition for cool junk less intense). And no, I'm not running directly to the record and book section. I'm sure someone somewhere is still finding unscratched Esquivel records for a dollar a pop, but I doubt it. Maybe I was just spoiled by my mid-90s run of luck at a thrift in the Boston area where I'd regularly take advantage of their awesome selection and low, low prices (10 cents per LP!) by loading up my cart with vinyl and equally el cheapo kiddie record players. But when I feel the urge to peruse the dusty and battered selection of vinyl at your typical thrift, my eyes start to glaze over and fingers stop digging at around the third Elton John or Firestone Christmas LP. Dire as the thrift store record situation may now be, I manage to find cool music-related crap on at least every other visit. Last time, it was an old-style, wire 45 RPM record holder, with clef note end pieces. And on Saturday, it was a Discwasher record-cleaning brush and solution. Search Art Van Damme Born 9 April 1920, Norway, Michigan T he hippest cat ever to swing an accordion, Art Van Damme dared go where no man had gone before: jazz accordion. He started taking accordion lessons at the age of nine, and moved on to classical studies after his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1934. After leaving school. he played in a trio in local clubs under big band leader Ben Bernie hired him in 1941. He soon returned to Chicago, though, and continued to work the club circuit there throughout World War Two. Van Damme was inspired by swing recordings, particularly Benny Goodman's, and in the late 1930s, he began experimenting, adapting Goodman solos to the accordion. Throughout his career, he would often be compared to Goodman, since the two were both classically trained, technical masters of their instruments, and versatile and creative jazz soloists. He formed a quintet with several of his studio colleagues, and recorded his first album, for the small label, Music Craft, in 1944. He joined the staff of NBC Radio in Chicago in 1945 and remained a studio musician for over 15 years, even after he became a recording artist in his own right. His early style fits into a small but at the time quite popular niche between the cocktail piano sound and the accordion/guitar/organ sound of the Three Suns. In fact, his earliest albums for Capitol and Columbia all had titles that made this connection explicit: "Cocktail Capers"; "Martini Time"; "Manhattan Time."

Today's Age features an excellent article by Pamela Bone, "George Bush's war on women." Bone details the decisions made by the Bush administration which have been motivated by a fanatical insistence that abortion be unavailable to women. These decisions include blocking contributions to the United Nations Population Fund, denying aid to any agency which tells women where they can get an abortion (even in countries where abortion is legal) and refusing to support any international agreement which mentions reproductive rights. For some reason, this shocked me. I always thought that the right of women to choose whether or not to have a child was a feminist battle that was won in the seventies. As Bone points out, today there are still people with reservations about late-term abortions or who would not choose to have an abortion themselves, but the absolute opposition of the Bush administration is an extreme position which is now exerting a significant role in international relations.
