Producing U2's Pop Published in SOS July 1997
Printer friendly version People : Artists/Engineers/Producers/Programmers
U2 have always striven for a new sound on each of the records they make, and during the sessions for their latest album, their aim was once again 'to construct a new sound for U2 whilst still making them sound like U2'. To this end, they brought in production wizard Flood and Scottish dance artist Howie B and set about new methods of recording. PAUL TINGEN investigates the art of Pop...
How many times is it possible for a band or an artist to successfully re-invent themselves? Is there a point beyond which one is doomed to repeat oneself, because another re-invention means losing an established musical identity? Is it necessary to keep re-inventing oneself at all, or is it acceptable to coast along, regurgitating a successful formula, purely for the pleasure of the fans and one's own enjoyment? And by what criteria is a re-invention judged to be a failure, or a success? These questions have been given new relevance and received new answers with the arrival of U2's latest album, Pop . Everybody knows that U2 have always believed regular re-invention to be an absolute necessity, and the way they have maintained their adventurous musical spirit, whilst still sounding undeniably like U2, has contributed greatly to their continuing critical and commercial popularity. This is quite an amazing achievement, given that it's now 20 years since the quartet first met in Dublin, and 17 years since they burst onto the international stage.

In the 1960’s, so called Pop Art transformed familiar objects into anomalies through scale and juxtaposition. The attitude is one of cheerful cynicism. It was a unique marriage of spirit and sense that delighted the public. Artists of the period, such as Andy Warhol, had their icons for which they became famous. The Bristol continues to develop its the Pop Art program and will lead the way in the arts and culture movement throughout the industry. The Bristol Hotel . 1055 First Avenue . The images of pop art (shortened from “popular art”) were taken from mass culture. Some artists duplicated beer bottles, soup cans, comic strips, road signs, and similar objects in paintings, collages, and sculptures. Others incorporated the objects themselves into their paintings or sculptures, sometimes in startlingly modified form. Materials of modern technology, such as plastic, urethane foam, and acrylic paint, often figured prominently. One of the most important artistic movements of the 20th century, pop art not only influenced the work of subsequent artists but also had an impact on commercial, graphic, and fashion design.

K r i s H o g l u n d: surreal pop art What is "Surreal Pop Art"?
In the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", the character played by Richard Dreyfuss displays a great example of what I call "Surreal Pop Art". Driven by something he can't quite seem to put his finger on and something beyond his ability to control, over and over he sculpts a vision from his mind, a vision that he does not understand. Although his first efforts don't satisfy his mind's eye, he continues to search, to refine, until the time comes that he makes the connection between what is coming out of him and what it means. Although the image in the movie was placed in his head by aliens, we all have subconscious imagery, visions that represent our life's experiences and emotional states.
Some of these visions are shared by many people as a result of mass culture and/or
I call my art "Surreal Pop Art" because I am driven to put the familiar images of my subconscious down on paper/canvas and interpret the meaning they have for me. The ones that mean the most to me personally generally don't connect with others unless they have had very similar life experiences, while the ones that speak of more general ideas tend to be more accessible.

Pop art
Pop art is an artistic movement that is a rejection of abstract expressionism and aims to return to figurative art while incorporating themes and techniques from mass culture. The term was coined in by British critic Laurence Alloway. Pop Art is also to some extent a satire of the philistine acquisitiveness of official art institutions – for example, early pop artists induced important museums to invest large sums of money in paintings of mundane subjects, done with acrylic paint on plywood, which quickly deteriorated. This movement gained strength in the and was centered in England and the United States early on. Notable Pop Artists include:
