Glossary Term: Pop Art
Pop art started in Britain in the 1950s and spread to America in the 1960's. Pop artists used popular culture in their works. They neither praised nor condemned what they saw, but wove the flood of popular culture into their art in much the same way popular culture flooded into people's subconscious. They often used media, advertising and comic book art styles to bring art closer to real life. Andy Warhol's paintings of soup cans and movie stars are classic examples of Pop art. Pop artists wanted to bring art back to the people and to make it more meaningful to everyday folks. Critics saw Pop art as vulgar, sensational and without merit. Supporters liked it because they felt it was an art everybody could understand and that it brought all elements of art and life to one level. Some well-known artists of this period were Andy Warhol , Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg.

POP ART
Pop art's subject matter was the slick, formulaic images of mass culture and its medium the stylized graphics of commercial art. Although originating in England, the movement flourished in America during the mid-1950s and 1960s. Glorifying everyday objects and visual clichés, it served as witty commentary on the materialism and banality of mid-twentieth-century America. Among its famous examples are Jasper Johns's American flags, the packaged sexuality of Tom Wesselman's Great American Nude series, Andy Warhol's canonization of the Campbell's soup can, and Roy Lichtenstein's blowups of comic strip details. Other artists associated with the movement included Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, and Jim Dine. Pop art was a reaction against the introspective and rarefied sensibility of abstract expressionism. Surface appearance replaced inner vision, humor substituted for high seriousness, and the impersonality of silk screen and the benday dot subsumed painterly expression. Like dada, its European forerunner, it challenged the concept of art by elevating the vulgar and ordinary to the status of art object. Yet pop art shared none of dada's vitriol; typically presenting the appearance of impervious neutrality toward its subject matter, it rarely betrayed outright satire. Detractors lamented that pop art merely imitated rather than transcended its content; supporters countered that by serving up the commonplace as icons, it invited examination of the numbing pervasiveness of secondhand experience.

POP ART You have just spent a hot summer afternoon beneath the blazing sun. Now you find yourself inside the local 7-11 store staring at the vast drink cooler stretching across the back wall. What do you feel like having? A soft drink? Juice? A sports drink? Or maybe a bottle of ice, cold water? How do you decide? Do you consult your taste buds? Or is it the drink with the bold, catchy name on the bright-coloured label that seems to command your attention? It is often our eyes, not our taste buds, that decides which drink would best quench our thirst. When we buy an edible product, we invariably see the package before we taste what is inside. Food companies realize this and make packaging and labels as eye-catching as possible. In this lesson, you will work with the Text Tool in Paint Shop Pro to design a label for a drink of your choice. You will learn how to change the style, size and strength of the text. You will also learn how to add special features such as text shadows and rotated text. By adjusting the properties of your label's text, you can make your product jump right out at the viewer.

    Pop Art
Pop Art is a movement that began in Germany in the 1950s, but had its most famous practitionersat least in this countryin Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Both used ads and comics for inspiration; the latter is most famous for his work mimicking comic books beginning in 1961. Of course, Bizet borrowed folk tunes in composing Carmen . Greek statues exist mainly because of Roman copies. Renaissance means “rebirth;” fifteenth century art and architecture copied from the past Not all artists appreciated the fact that Lichtenstein copied their work, despite the fact that comic book artists had been doing it for years, the least talented ones lifting the work of better-paid strip artists like Milton Caniff, Alex Raymond and Hal Foster. (In the comic book world, copying another’s art was called either a “swipe” or an “homage,” depending on intent.) Comic book artists may have resented the fact that while they got $50 a page for their work, Lichtenstein was commanding gallery prices of $50,000 for hisand had the wherewithal to hire as many as five assistants at one time! Lichtenstein mostly abandoned comic books as a source for inspiration after 1964, but returned to comic motifs toward the end of his career in the 1990s. (I suspect this reflected the prices that "comic book" paintings commanded relative to other paintings he did during the interim.) Warhol and Lichtenstein both saw the day when artists stole their styles back. Lichtenstein’s broad lines and “Ben Day” dots can be seen frequently in ads and on magazine covers today. In this case, art continues to imitate art. If Lichtenstein were still alive today, he couldn't get too mad about my swiping his style for many of my paintings. Roy, consider it an homage.

We work on the problem of the safe design of real-time control systems. This area is touching as well on control theory as on computer science, and the application domains are typically safety-critical systems, as in transportation (avionics, trains), production, medical or energy production systems. There is a need for methods and formal models that can be implemented in effective, automated assitance tools, targeted to specialists of the applications. We contribute to propose solutions all along the design flow, between specification and implementation: we devellop techniques for the specification and automated generation of safe real-time executives for control systems.
