    The Pony Express History Page
THE FORMATION- The Pony Express was the experimental brainchild of William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William Bradford Waddell, thus the name Russell, Majors, and Waddell. It was formed in the hopes of getting a 1 million dollar contract for the parent company of Central Overland California, and Pikes Peak Express Company. It all started on January 27,1860 when William Russell wired his Fort Leavenworth office to say that the Pony Express would start. the time from St. Joeseph, MO to Sacremento, CA was ten days. Thus the call went out and The Pony Express was concieved.
THE CALL- The call went out. Signs were posted from that day forward. Many different variations of the original help sign have been made. so we do not know what exactly the original sign said, but it went a little something like this. "Wanted. Young, skinny, wiry fellows. Not over 18. Must be expert riders. Willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred." THE OATH- Every rider was required to say an oath.

Orphans Preferred: The Twisted Truth and Lasting Legend of the Pony Express > Customer Review #1: Orphans Leads to Happy Trails

If dry wit and historical musings are your cup of tea, this book is for you. Christopher Corbett mixes facts, hearsay, and humor to provide an engaging and amusing tale of the Pony Express, its creators, riders, and historians. What little is known of the Pony comes from decades of oral history and embellishments, leaving the truth to toss around like a tumbleweed in the wind, but Corbett leaves no trail untrod as he explores facts and tall tales of the famous mail delivery service. No one can unravel all the twists of the poorly documented, short lived Express, but Corbetts exploration into the past will give you some answers and quite a few chuckles.

Out went the call in 1860. And the applicants streamed in. The position? Riders for the first overland mail courier service connecting the eastern States with California, the Pony Express. About 80 young riders were in use at any one time in this ambitious enterprise of delivering the mail cross-country in 10 days the Pony Express. In addition, some 400 other employees included station keepers, stock tenders and route superintendents. Riders were paid $100 to $125 per month. Dozens of applicants competed for jobs, not only willing but eager to accept the life-threatening rigors they would soon experience. Mark Twain , who saw the Pony Express in action first hand, described a rider as: "... usually a little bit of a man". Though small in stature, their untarnished record proved them to have hearts of lions. History would record that they were among the most durable horsemen ever. Its Inception To meet the need for a more dependable communication with the West, the stage and freight company of Russell, Majors, and Waddell proposed a mail relay service between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Benjamin Franklin had organized pony-delivered mail service in eastern areas, but historians disagree on who had the first idea for a western Pony Express. However, it was William H. Russell, conferring early in 1860 with California's U. S. Senator William Gwen, then Chairman of the Senate Post Office and Post Roads Committee, who was responsible for putting the Pony Express into operation.

on Pony Express Territory Pony Express Territory Pony Express Territory is a land of untrampled natural wonders and charming mining towns that still look much as they did more than a century ago. Traveling east to west, your first stop on U.S. Hwy. 50 should be at Great Basin National Park, home of ancient bristlecone pines. These gnarled giants, which only grow at elevations of more than 10,000 feet, can live to be 4,000 years old. The park also has hiking trails that lead to alpine lakes and majestic mountain tops, including 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak, the second highest point in Nevada. The Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Ely incorporates the rail yards, shops and rolling stock of the Nevada Northern Railway, a shortline that operated from 1906 to the early 1980s. Seventy-eight miles west of Ely is Eureka, one of the best- preserved 19th-century mining towns in Nevada. Founded in 1864, Eureka boasts many of its original buildings, a number of which have been carefully restored. The most impressive is the Eureka Courthouse, which opened in 1880. Across the street is the Eureka Opera House, built in 1880, which has been renovated into a modern convention facility and performing arts center.

    Introduction:
MYTH AND REALITY OF THE PONY EXPRESS INTRODUCTION
Perhaps no event in Western American history has captured the imagination and held the interest of people as the story of the Pony Express. Since this episode of transportation history blazed across our frontier past (in service only eighteen months), many participants, eyewitnesses, as well as Western writers, authors, and scholars have written about it with great admiration in popular books, and scholarly monographs and journal articles. Even motion pictures [ ] and television have adopted the heroic saga as their own, depicting the young men on horseback withstanding weather, enduring fatigue, and facing danger from attack by Indians, in order to carry the nation's mail as rapidly as possible across the nineteen hundred miles between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Today, this saga is deeply ingrained in our American heritage, and has become a symbol of our western past. A majority of the works on the Pony Express have popularized its lore over the realities and hardships of the operation. From the start, literary writers depicted Express riders in gallant, adventurous terms. For instance, in August of 1860, one newspaper writer described the "journey of the Pony" this way: Using a good thesaurus, a little imagination, and a flair for the written word, many authors simply rewrote, reorganized, and re-romanticized manuscripts about the Pony Express, such as the above quotation. Over the years, they have added little insight into the history of the Pony Express. Other sources tell the story of the Pony Express fairly accurately, however they provide little or no documentation to support their statements.

    American History
    Wetward Ho
contributed by Lu Hickey From 1860 to 1862, Pony Express riders carried mail n relays from St. Joseph, MO to Sacramento, CA. Riders were out of "St. Joe" had only a brief gallop to the wide Missouri River where ferry boats conveyed them over the river. From St. Joseph the Pony Express followed the Oregon-California trail across northeast Kansas territory then ran north to the Platte river in Nebraska and west to Sacramento, California. The Kansas section of the route had 11 stations. The original station in Marysville still stands. Relay stations were established 15-20 miles apart where riders would change horses. The Oregon Trail was known by many names, The Mormon Trail, the Platte Trail and the California Trail, as these were the most common trails used by the diverse settlers moving west to attempt to tame the west, the Indians, and the new frontier. The Oregon Trail was used by the Army, and stagecoaches and the Pony Express followed part of the trail. In 1830, William Sublette took the firs wagons along the route to the rocky Mountains. By the middle of the 1840s, traffic on the Oregon Trail was tremendous and the California gold rush increased its use even more in 1849 and 1850.
