The chemistry of polymers 2nd edition
The chemistry of polymers is a concise, easy-to-read, inexpensive introduction to the subject and fulfils the need for a polymer text written from an applied angle. It covers the basics of polymer chemistry while emphasising the practical applications and is essential for those who wish to acquire a rapid overview of the field. This book covers the basics of polymer synthesis, characterisation, reaction kinetics and materials science, as well as important specialised topics such as polymer degradation, polymers and pollution, and a variety of technological developments. Now in its second edition, the book has been revised and expanded to reflect recent developments in the subject. There are, for example, extensive updates to the "Special topics in polymer chemistry" section, with an additional section on optically active polymers, expanded sections on ionic and co-ordination polymerisations, and co-polymerisation, and additional examples of new environmental legislation are outlined wherever appropriate. POLYMER AND MATERIALS CHEMISTRY AT UCI:
Synthesis and Applications The Importance of Polymers and Materials
Polymers and materials play an essential role in our life. They improve our health, enhance our living condition, and advance new technologies. Creation of these functional substances requires fundamental knowledge of the chemistry of converting molecular species into macroscopic forms. Due to the pervasive nature and importance of polymers and materials, chemists who are trained in these areas will always be in demand. The need to enhance the performance of existing materials and to create new substances that satisfy advanced performance criteria stimulates research on the basic principles of polymers and materials and makes this an exciting and challenging endeavor.
Research in polymer and materials chemistry is necessarily interdisciplinary and at UCI diverse opportunities are available to obtain a PhD degree in this developing area. The Faculty The graduate program in polymer and materials chemistry spans the areas of inorganic, organic, physical, and biological chemistry and faculty from all of these areas are involved. Students in polymer and materials chemistry complete degree requirements in the specific area which is optimum for their special needs and interests, but they obtain a broad exposure to different topics via the diversified activities of the faculty and research groups in the field.

The study is concentrated on the both microbial and chemical syntheses of biodegradable polymers which are environment-friendly new-polymeric materials. The objective of the study on biopolymers is to understand the nature and mechanism of biological polymerization and to design new polymer compounds with biodegradable and biocompatible properties. In addition, the structure and properties of enzymes for biosynthesis and hydrolysis of polyesters have been investigated.

MRIC The groups at Bangor work mainly in the polymer area, though our colleagues at the affiliated MRCI at NEWI have extensive experience with colloid chemistry. Close collaborations within the department have resulted in the preparation of several new low band gap conducting polymers with potential applications in the electronics industry. New water soluble polymers and fibers are also being developed to provide new, safe materials for medical applications and packaging for foods. Natural polymers are studied and exploited in the universitie's Biocomposites centre . Arlington, VA, May 2004 - For high school teachers who want to introduce polymer science basics, properties, and uses into their curriculum, Polymer Chemistry: Introduction to an Indispensable Science , just published by the National Science Teachers Association's NSTA Press®, is the ideal resource. According to statistics, more than half of all chemists work on some aspect of polymers. The book's author, subject expert David M. Teegarden, has long been a leader in presenting local and national programs for precollegiate science teachers, encouraging them to expose students to this important subject. Formerly an instructor in organic and polymer chemistry at the college level and a long-time polymers expert in private industry, Teegarden has authored a book that is deeper than simple monographs or collections of experiments, and more accessible than college texts. You might refer to pp. 410-428 of Chemistry: Molecules, Matter and Change , Peter Atkins and Loretta Jones, Third Edition, W. H. Freeman, NY, 1997. Polymers are giant molecules , long sequences of chemical units bonded together. Some polymers are natural in origin: cellulose consists of repeated glucose units, natural rubber consist of repeated units of isoprene. Proteins consist of a sequence of amino acids of a predetermined length and sequence, DNA and RNA consist of phosphate backbones with predetermined sequences of four nucleic acids. Some polymers are synthetic : polyethylene consists of long sequences of ethylene units, nylon consists of a long sequence of alternating units of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine formed into a continuous polyamide. Silicone polymers consist of repeated units of dimethyl silicone: CH

Polymer Microsphere Preparation. Drugs and other growth factors have been incorporated into biodegradable polymeric microspheres for many years.
In the Polymer Laboratory, we are using a single oil/water emulsion technique to encapsulate vascular reagents,a double water/oil/water emulsion technique to encapsulate growth factors, and a coacervation technique to encapsulate anti-tumor drugs into microspheres. Polymer Scaffold Fabrication.
There are numerous protocols used to prepare porous polymer scaffolds for tissue engineering applications.
In the Polymer Laboratory, two techniques that are routinely used are solvent-casting/ particulate-leaching and temperature-induced-phase-separation/freeze-drying. Polymer scaffolds with varying porosities, pore sizes and degradation rates are obtained. Both synthetic and native polymeric scaffolds are fabricated.
We are also implementing novel "block-building" techniques to incorporate the multi drug-containing microspheres into tissue-engineered scaffolds.
