There are currently ~320 majors enrolled in the Chemistry and Biochemistry B.S. degree programs. The department has an excellent faculty whose focus is teaching. We strive to maintain academic excellence in the classroom, provide students with quality, hands-on learning using state-of-the-art equipment, while pursuing professional development to stay abreast of current teaching methods and new discoveries in specialized fields. The wide variety of upper division elective courses is a testament to currency and relevance. During the 2001-2002 academic year the students voted to increase instructional fees so that more support would be available for student-centered activities and instrumentation. Student representatives from each department in the College of Science and Mathematics constitute a committee and develop a spending plan for the enhancement of programs goals for the next year. For more information on the use of college-based fees during the last two years, please go to the

In polymer chemistry research, advances announced this year included shape-memory and self-healing polymers and doubly activated metallocene catalysts. Novel shape-memory polymers were made to order this year by biomaterials department head Andreas Lendlein and graduate student Annette M. Schmidt at the German Wool Research Institute, Aachen, and professor of chemical engineering Robert Langer of MIT [ Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, ]. Other shape-memory materialssuch as nickel-titanium alloys used in orthodontic wires and eyeglass frameshad already been available. But shape-programming of metal alloys is a time-consuming procedure involving heat treatment at elevated temperatures. In addition, the alloys' maximum deformation is limited, and the materials are expensive. The new polymers can be programmed quickly at milder temperatures, they are much more deformable, and they're less expensive. A type of plastic that automatically heals cracks in its structure caused by stress, corrosion, and aging was developed at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, by aeronautical engineering professors

Abstracts and Indexes
While it is possible to search for a polymer in Chemical Abstracts Online (CAS) using a common name or trade name, using a CAS Registry Number is the most precise and comprehensive way to search for a specific polymer. CAS assigns a Registry Number for a polymer using either the monomer or the structural repeating unit. A list of CAS Numbers for the 500 most common polymers is listed as an appendix in the Polymer Handbook.
