Marco Polo = Marko Pilich, the Croat?
Marco Polo (1254 ? - 1324) was a famous explorer, who opened Europe to Asia, including China. Henry S. Hart in his book "Venetian Adventurer: Marco Polo" (Oklahoma, 1967) states that Marco Polo was "a descendant of an old Dalmatian family which had come from Sibenik , Dalmatia, and settled in Venice in the 11th Century." Hart then goes on to say, "The crews of the Venetian ships were freemen, so many of them Slavonians (Croatians) from the Dalmatian Coast, that the long quay by St. Mark's was and is known as Riva degli Sciavoni (Slavonian = Croatian)." Marco Polo was buried in a Slavic quarter in Venice, near the Riva degli Sciavoni (or "Riva od Hrvatov", according to Croatian sources). Especially important is Marco Polo's Coat of Arms which includes four chickens . In Italian, Polo means chicken or fowl (written as pollo in Italian). In Croatian Pilich means chicks or chickens. Accidnet or coincidence? This is a question raised by dr Adam Eterovic, distinguished expert in Croatian heraldry. As indicated by dr Eterovic, the merchant and the noble class in Dalmatia did use two names, one Latin-Italian as citizens of Vencie, and their own Slavic name in their own circles. Bogdanich became Bogdaneo, Mladinich - Mladineo, Arnerich - Arneri, Glavinich - Capogrosso. Some simply used the Latin - Italian meaning of their name, such as Cvietkovich - Florio or Fiorini, Vukasinovich - Lupich, Pilich - Polo, etc.

While these artifacts are hard to authenticate, there are few long-standing homes in Cavendish, P.E.I . that do not lay claim to some remnant of the ship-wrecked vessel, the Marco Polo. Its story has spread just as widely as its relics. The ship was built in 1851 by Smith Shipbuilding of Saint John, New Brunswick. The vessel took its name from the Italian explorer, whose principal claim to greatness was the new trade routes he staked out between Europe and China. Appropriately enough, the ship that bore his name also won accolades for its Pacific voyages. After completing a round trip between England and Australia in a scant 11 months and 21 days, it won the undisputed title of the fastest ship afloat in the world. Banking on this recognition, its owners sold it to the Black Bell line, where it became one of the most famous passenger ships of its day. Enduring a regular battering from the seas, however, wooden ships could not stay fast or glamorous forever. As it aged, the Marco Polo followed a predictable fall from grace. It was refitted and used in the Australian immigrant trade. By 1880, it had been condemned and was purchased by a Norwegian company to export Canadian timber. While the Marco Polo may have been carrying fresh lumber, its own wooden hull had seen its better days. In 1883, the ship was heading back for England and, just off the coast of Prince Edward Island, its seams began to pour water. The crew began to jettison cargo, but in the process, had to saw in half some of the ship's supporting girders. The move backfired, as the gale force winds began loosening the ship's tired hull even more. Finally, in an effort to salvage at least their own lives, the captain and crew ran the ship aground at Cavendish beach.

He sent them back to Venice as his ambassadors to the Pope. He sent a request for 100 wise men to teach his people about Christianity. They were given gold tablets to prove they were on the Khan's business so they would have safe passage. Kind of like the first passports! It took them three years to get home. The Pope had died and it was 2 years before another one was elected. Marco was 15 years old when his father returned and 17 years old when the set out on their return trip to the East. Briefing Are you ready for a big family vacation? Imagine that one of your parents has asked you to accompany him or her on a long trip from Europe to eastern China, retracing the steps of Marco Polo. Now all you can think about is what it will look like there, what the people will be like, what you should pack, and what your friends and relatives will want you to bring back to share with them. (You can let your mom or dad worry about everything else.) Perhaps explorer Marco Polo wondered about these things. In 1271, 17-year-old Marco left his hometown of Venice, Italy, with his father and uncle, embarking on an adventure that lasted 24 years, and took him to places that Europeans had never even heard of.
