was born in Venice, Italy, in 1254. His father, Nicolo Polo and his uncle Maffeo Polo , known as the Polo brothers , were merchants, business partners. His mother died in 1269, so he was raised by his uncle and aunt. He was extremely interested in the practices of different people, different animal and plants, as well as natural resources. Marco Polo went with his father and uncle on many business trips. In 1271, Marco, his father and his uncle went on a journey to China to bring letters and gifts from Pope Clement X to Kublai Khan . They passed through Armenia, Persia, and Afghanistan, over the Pamirs, and all along the Silk Road to China. They reached Shang-tu in 1275. They were the first Europeans to visit most of the territory they traveled in this journey, particularly the Pamir and Gobi desert.

Click on a thumbnail to enlarge Marco Polo bridge was first constructed in 1192, but the original stones were washed away in a 17th century flood. The reconstruction dates from that era. The bridge is famous because it is mentioned in the annals written by Marco Polo, a European explorer who visited the Mongol Yuan dynasty court in the 13th century. Though not exactly an engineering marvel, the bridge is 260 meters long with nearly 500 carved stone lions. It spans the Yongding river which was dry at the time of our visit. The fame of the bridge was not lost on the 18th century Emperor Qianlong, who inscribed calligraphy on a stele on the bridge. The bridge has occupied a place of notoriety in Chinese history since July 7, 1937, when Japanese troops fired the first shots that led China into World War II. On the fateful day, Japanese troops overwhelmed a railway junction in the nearby town of Wanping and incited Chinese troops to attack their position. This failed, but it gave Japan an excuse to occupy Beijing.

Marco Polo Marco Polo is one of the most well-known heroic travelers and traders around the world. I will discuss with you Marco Polo's life, his travels, and his visit to China to see the great Khan. Marco Polo was born in c.1254 in Venice. He was a Venetian explorer and merchant whose account of his travels in Asia was the primary source for the European image of the Far East until the late 19th century. Marco's father, Niccol? and his uncle Maffeo had traveled to China (1260-69) as merchants. When they left (1271) Venice to return to China, they were accompanied by 17-year-old Marco and two priests. Early Life Life’s Work From Persia, the Polos made their way back to Venice. They were robbed as soon as they got into Christian territory, but they still managed to reach home in 1295, with plenty of rich goods. According to Giovanni Battista Ramusio, one of the early editors of Marco’s book, the Polos strode into Venice looking like rugged Mongols(Stefoff 17). Having thought them dead, their relatives at first did not recognize them, then were astounded, and then were disgusted by their shabby appearance. Yet, according to Ramusio, the scorn changed to delight when the returned travelers invited everyone to a homecoming banquet, ripped apart their old clothes, and let all the hidden jewels clatter to the table(Great Lives from History 1676).
