NASA Study shows common plants help reduce indoor air pollution.... C ommon indoor plants may provide a valuable weapon in the fight against rising levels of indoor air pollution. Those plants in your office or home are not only decorative, but NASA scientists are finding them to be surprisingly useful in absorbing potentially harmful gases and cleaning the air inside modern buildings.
NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) have announced the findings of a 2-year study that suggest a sophisticated pollution-absorbing device: the common indoor plant may provide a natural way of helping combat " SICK BUILDING SYNDROME ".
Research into the use of biological processes as a means of solving environmental problems, both on Earth and in space habitats, has been carried out for many years by Dr. Bill Wolverton, formerly a senior research scientist at NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center, Bay St. Louis, Miss.
Based on preliminary evaluations of the use of common indoor plants for indoor air purification and revitalization, ALCA joined NASA to fund a study using about a dozen popular varieties of ornamental plants to determine their effectiveness in removing several key pollutants associated with indoor air pollution. NASA research on indoor plants has found that living plants are so efficient at absorbing contaminants in the air that some will be launched into space as part of the biological life support system aboard future orbiting space stations.

127. Air Pollution: What's The Solution?
Welcome to Air pollution What’s the Solution? an educational projectfor students, grades 6 12, that uses online real time
http://k12science.ati.stevens-tech.edu/curriculum/airproj/
Welcome to Air Pollution: What’s the Solution? an educational project for students, grades 6 - 12, that uses online real time data to guide student discovery of the science behind the causes and effects of ground level ozone. Ozone is a gas that occurs both in the Earth’s upper atmosphere and at ground level. Ozone can be "good" or "bad", depending on where it is found:
Good Ozone , ozone that occurs naturally in the Earth’s upper atmosphere—10 to 30 miles above the Earth’s surface—shields us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Good Ozone, or stratospheric ozone, is the type of ozone most frequently discussed in the media. Bad Ozone , is found in the Earth’s lower atmosphere, near ground level. Ground level ozone is an odorless and invisible gas that forms when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react chemically in the presence of sunlight. The presence of ground level ozone presents a serious air quality problem in many parts of the United States. For humans and other animals, ozone is harmful when it is inhaled. Even at low levels of concentration, ozone can cause a number of respiratory effects. Through this project, students will focus on ground level ozone, discovering what ground level ozone is, what factors contribute to its formation and the health effects from breathing ozone. Students will use data and animated maps from the internet and monitor for the presence of ground level ozone. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively about the problems surrounding ground level ozone.

From the Chair:
BobVolkmar, Chair, AMS (volkmar@duq.edu) Another program year is behind us, and thanks to the Program Committee, we are quite a bit wiser. The Section’s programming is intended to contribute to the education and professional development of our members, and there is no doubt in my mind that it did just that. From the audio+webcasts and the monthly luncheons to the half-day workshops, every program event provided an opportunity to learn and grow. In addition, some were downright entertaining. May’s luncheon is a case in point. At the beginning of his talk, Chuck Duritsa, Director of DEP’s Southwest Regional Office, advised that his intent was to entertain rather than to instruct. In fact, he did both.

    Smelling hearing seeing
When you step out of your house in the morning:
    • what do you smell? Fresh air? More likely you smell something people have made: car exhaust, factory stinks or smoke from someone's cigarette. Perhaps you've never smelt real fresh air: the sweet smell of damp earth, the scent of pine trees or of the sea. These are the breath of our planet.
    • what do you hear? Birdsong ? Nothing? More likely you hear the roar of traffic on a nearby road, an airliner overhead, someone's TV or radio. Perhaps you've never been lucky enough to hear the gentle sounds of wild places: grasshoppers chirping, birds singing, the wind sighing gently in the trees, the burble of a little stream. Or just the deep stillness of a night when there's no wind to make any sound. Everyone should be able to hear these sounds. They are the voice of our planet.
