Brain at risk from the environment
By environment correspondent Alex Kirby Pollution and other environmental threats are harming the intelligence of millions of people across the world, says a United Kingdom review of the available evidence. The causes are poisons such as lead, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls, synthetic compounds used in electrical equipment), and radiation.
The human brain is now at risk from its own behaviour, and nothing else in the ecosystem is harming itself in the same way
Dr Chris Williams A further problem is the loss of micronutrients like iron and iodine through soil erosion, impoverishing food crops. And scientists say it is hard to know the full extent of the problem, because of the difficulty of gathering data. The author, Dr Chris Williams, a social scientist at the Institute of Education, London University, said one problem could compound another, with iron deficiency in children, for example, able to increase their lead uptake.

[As of August 1999, we are still getting 400-600 accesses per week, with over 100,000 estimated accesses to these NELPAG web pages since 1995.] We have found that there is a great public demand for information on outdoor-lighting issues, and that there has been unfortunately a great dearth of sources that the interested individual can seek out. It should not be surprising, then, that we have received high praise from many people around the world for the information provided here. Imagine children growing up without being allowed to see trees or birds (or any other aspect of nature): now, how is this any different from preventing our children from seeing the stars?! But by our thoughtless erection of outdoor lights everywhere - without consideration of glare and light trespass, without consideration of safety, without consideration of the right to privacy, and without consideration of the energy waste and the waste of taxpayer dollars - we are making it so that a very small percentage of children are able to grow up in the world today with the ability to see and ponder the wonders of our beautiful starry night sky. Indeed, after a full century now of outdoor electrical lighting, one must wonder what a lot of the lighting manufacturers and installers were

E-mail, the net, weblogs, instant messaging, text messaging, multi-media messaging... the list of ways to communicate electronically in the 21st Century is growing.
People need to prioritise and be more disciplined To some, all these tools which are only a couple of clicks and screen flicks away have transformed the way they work and run their lives. To web guru Jakob Nielsen, it is computers which are starting to control us, and it is time to "rule the computer and put it back in its place". Known as the king of usability, Dr Nielsen has published and consulted extensively on how best to maximise the net and websites around what people want. But he has recently turned his critical eye to what he says is a drastically worsening situation in electronic communication, something he has dubbed as "information pollution". Daily pollutants When the World Wide Web created a navigable web in the 1990s, e-mail and the net became a key way to communicate quickly and without much effort.

Living near incinerators may increase the chance of twins Women who live in areas with high levels of pollution are more likely to have twins, research suggests.
German scientists found the rate of twin births in areas with high environmental pollution were double that of other areas. The rate was highest among women living near a toxic waste incinerator, the authors say in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal. They recommend further research to find out why this might be. The University of Hamburg team compared twin birth rates among mothers living near an incinerator in Hesse and mothers living in two other regions of Germany. Proximity to pollution One region was 20km north of the incinerator and the other was a non-industrial area much further away. In areas where people lived close to the incinerator or other heavy industries, the twin birth rate was about twice as high as other areas. In Hesse, 5.3% of mothers had twins compared to 1.6% 20km away and 2.3% in the non-industrial area.

Atmospheric Chemistry Studies in the Oceanic Environment (ACSOE), which took place between 1995 and 2000, is a UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Thematic Research Programme to investigate the chemistry of the lower atmosphere (0 - 12 km) over the oceans. The studies aimed to bring about a clearer understanding of natural processes in the remote marine atmosphere, and how these processes are affected by atmospheric pollution originating from the continents. Hi, my name is Vicky. I started this website because I feel that we are not thinking about preserving our planet as often as we should. Almost everywhere you look, there's litter. Recent summers have been so hot and humid partly because of air pollutants, of which 80% is made up by cars. At the rate it's going our earth could be dead before your children's lives are over. Do you want them to live in that kind of situation?
I hope you're viewing this site with the thought "what can I do to help?" One of the best things that anyone could do is spread the word. You can link to this website from your own, you can tell your friends and family, whatever you think is best.
I hope after this visit you will have a better understanding of our condition. You might be thinking "But I'm just one person, what difference could I make?" Well imagine if everyone thought like that. Where would we be now? Think positively, and others around you will too. Before you know it, you'll have inspired many more people to take action!
