We support EPA's mission and in addition our office goals include:
  • Promoting pollution prevention as the guiding principle for controlling industrial pollution;
  • Promoting safer chemicals through a combination of regulatory and voluntary efforts;
  • Promoting risk reduction so as to minimize exposure to existing substances such as lead, asbestos, dioxin, and polychlorinated biphenyls; and
  • Promoting public understanding of risks by providing understandable, accessible and complete information on chemical risks to the broadest audience possible.
OPPT has the primary responsibility for administering the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and the Pollution Prevention Act of 1990. It also manages the Chemical Right-to-Know Initiative and the New and Existing Chemicals programs; the Design for the Environment (DFE), Green Chemistry, and Environmentally Preferable Products (EPP) programs; and the Lead, Asbestos, and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) programs.

Green Meetings ... Environmental Accounting "Pollution prevention pays," say several of the nation's leading corporations. Increasingly, the nation is coming to understand prevention's value—as an environmental strategy, as a sustainable business practice, as a fundamental principle for all our society. P2 is also a vehicle for "reinventing" traditional Agency programs and devising innovative alternative strategies to protect public health and the environment. It is a key element of new EPA initiatives to focus attention on reducing risks from persistent, bioaccumulative toxic pollutants in the air, in water, and on land; to promote environmental justice and urban environmental quality; to empower state and tribal programs; to lower the incidence of climate change; and to demonstrate the results and benefits of our labors. In addition, EPA is incorporating P2 into programs that encourage environmentally preferable purchasing and corporate eco-efficiency. P2 is a building block for private sector environmental performance and sustainability.

Visit! The Astronomical Society of Greater Hartford is a club member of the International Dark-Sky Association The members of the Light Pollution Education Committee work hard to raise awareness of the Society members and the general public to inform them about the effects that obtrusive outdoor lighting have on society. Light Pollution affects astronomers more profoundly in one way because it greatly diminishes, if not completely removes the view of deep sky objects in the cosmos, but the Light Pollution affects everyone!
Join! What is Light Pollution? How could light ever pollute something? It disappears as soon as the lamp is turned off and no sticky toxic residue is left in its wake. This cannot be a form of pollution, can it? The answer is yes, light can actually pollute the outdoor environment and wash away the view of stars in the sky. As awareness raises around the world, this term is heard in more and more places. It is a curable problem and can be prevented through the application of well designed and applied outdoor lighting. Light Pollution occurs in the three following forms:
  • It causes an atmospheric phenomenon known as skyglow. Have you ever noticed the clouds overhead glowing an eerie pink, white, or orange color before? This wasted light is known as skyglow. It happens because of poorly designed and improperly aimed light fixtures called luminaires. Luminaires that do not offer adequate shielding usually spill wasted light into the sky and across property lines where it does not benefit anyone. When light spills into the sky, it reflects off of tiny airborne dust and moisture particles. This happens even on very clear evenings, too. The skyglow phenomenon directly affects the scientific research of amateur and professional astronomers. It also affects everyone else who simply enjoys a dark night sky abundant with stars overhead. Skyglow is a curable condition, and we can still have adequate and safe illumination in the outdoor environment.

    When it comes to mixing oil and water, oceans suffer from far more than an occasional devastating spill. Only about 5 percent of oil pollution in the oceans is due to major tanker accidents.
    TOXIC MATERIALS Metals and slowly degrading chemicals threaten inland and coastal waters
    Industrial, agricultural, household cleaning, gardening, and automotive products regularly end up in coastal waters.
    DANGEROUS DEBRIS Trash can kill
    When odds and ends of life on land particularly plasticsend up in the sea, they can harm marine life when they are mistaken as food or entangle animals.
    Coastal mining booms could lead to ecological problems
    Not only are the oceans used as dumping grounds, but they have recently become the source for materials that by their removal, could have serious consequences
