123. Bohemian National Polka
Choreography by Richard Powers, intended to portray the original 1830s National Style of polka from Bohemia.
http://dance.stanford.edu/syllabi/BNP.htm
BOHEMIAN NATIONAL POLKA
This choreography by Richard Powers is based on a reconstruction by the Czech dance historian Frantisek Bonus (1919-1999). It is intended to portray the steps and forms of the original 1830s National Style of Polka from Bohemia, ten years before "polkamania" swept the world.
Prof. Bonus' long and complex original choreography was intended for stage performance by a professional company. This version is still challenging but has been shortened to a social form danced for pleasure.
Music: Josef Strauss' "Feuerfest Polka" at 104 beats/min (slower than modern polkas).
An especially good recording is by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra on the CD "Ein Straussfest". Telarc CD-80098.
Note: One bar of music equals the time of two walking steps or one polka step.
Introduction: 4 bars. Taking hands (his R, her L), honor partners: 1) Step back away from partner. 2) Close feet together, stand tall and look at partner. 3) Honor partner (she plies, head still raised, as he inclines slightly forward, flat back, bending at the waist). 4. Rise and face line-of-direction (LOD).

2 days of being 26....Stan has told me, and a trust-worthy source he is indeed, that from now on my age shall increase in leaps of 2 years, so next year I'll be 29. So, by 2017 he will be 53, as will I according to his hair brained scheme. We shall celebrate 21 years of being together in the year 2020 with him being 56 and me 59.

The gym thing is still going strong: I swear my fat back is melting, but I can't get over my shame of sweating within two sighs of the Sun Salutation and three flexes of my biceps. Never can I exit the gym with the glow of a pretty young girl: only with the seething crimson visage of a constipated cartoon character. I shouldn't care - hell, I can get my legs wider and higher and lower than all the pasty non-sweaters - but you always find something to whinge about. postCount('june02');

Currently there is little content on this site, yet it hopes to grow to be a very warped Weird Al Site. Just stick around, well okay. It might not be a good idea to glue yourself to the computer, or put sticky tacky all over your forehead and press your face up against the monitor just waiting for this site to be updated.
Unless..... you want to.... but if you leave, remember to come back. At least once every century. Anyway enough with the corny introductions. You're not here to listen to me talk. On with what *is* actually on this site...
Well, I actually updated this place! Hurray! Thanks to all *glances at counter* oh 500 of you, who have come here! In a week I'll be going to see Weird Al again! I freaked when I found out he'd be coming to OKC on August 25th. So I'll have another strange review for you, and I hope I meet Al this time but then just being at the concert is a great experience in itself. The picture down there awful quality as it is is the pic from the last concert I went to. I wasn't sure if it had come out or not, but it did. Yeay!

136. Polka Dance
The town of Kostelec nad Labem claims to be the birthplace of the polka.
http://kostelec-nad-labem.misto.cz/_MAIL_/polkaen.htm
Polka - popular Czech dance Kostelec nad Labem is birth place of the Czech dance - Polka. In 1834 Anna Chadimova came to Kostelec nad Labem from the Sedlcany county. She served in the Klastersky family. Anna was well-tempered, she always sang and danced when she worked. The Klastersky were a musical family. Preceptor Josef Neruda taught their childern to play the piano. Anna enthraled Neruda, she was always happy and her favourite song was "Nimra". Neruda let her sing it for him and he composed music to the song. Anna happily danced to that melody. The melody and step of the dance become known to the young people in the town. They danced in the streets and in the pub at night. The dance become very popular and was introduced to Prague. The polka comes to the world with love from Kostelec nad Labem. The destiny of both people responsible for birth of polka dance wasn't a fairytale. Anna died as a beggar and preceptor Neruda was murdered. Some music samples of classic polka.

140. Polka CD Reviews By Nostradamus -- The Polka Page
Devoted to reviews and ratings of polka CDs. Reader submissions are welcome.
http://www.nostradamus.net/polka_page.htm
The Polka Page
Reviews Genres and Artists Bibliography Links This page was begun because I couldn't find any polka album reviews on the web, which I found frustrating because I'm interested in buying more polka CDs. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the whole state of polka writing (that is, writing about polkas) is abysmal. The few books in print are wholly inadequate (there is no Rough Guide to polkas). The liner notes with most polka CDs don't list the dates of the recording sessions nor the names of the musicians. Even the otherwise-exhaustively-thorough All Music Guide is limited to about six polka artists. I can only hope that I make some small contribution to changing the current state of affairs. After all, I put up the first page on the Web devoted to Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs in the mid-90s. Now there are about six different sites that cover their career.
Reviews
New acquisitions: Walt Wagner and the Polka Serenaders Orchestra Present Giant Polkas Featuring Music of the Great Bands of the Connecticut Valley Jammin' Polkas
(Steve Meisner Band, [self-published] HG-5045) Steve's got that bright Slovenian sound, like the hot glint of the sun bouncing off a chrome bumper in the middle of August. He's got a great polka voice and the lyrics are even in English. "Blue Island," written with Bob Kreiser, is an impressive original I think it's a polka-bolero. And the last cut, Steve's version of the Buck Owens "Where Did the Good Times Go?" is real showstopper. I like the fact that the vocal harmonies are real, not synthesized. I like the use of sax and flute. I even like Steve's bass playing. The production and engineering are good, as was the CD conversion (the album was originally recorded in 1988). Liner notes credit the songwriters and musicians. Only 35 minutes. B+ [5-3-04]
