household ink home products roster press ... links Liner notes for Headless Household, post-Polka by Greg Drust One of the last unexplored realms of Americana is the rich and colorful tapestry of European-American polka music. Charlie Mingus was to have said, "White man, study your polkas." Here Headless Household playfully has opened the songbook. This project is buoyant, contemporary and original. Influences from the German, Polish, Scandinavian, Tejano, Klezmer and American Country/Western polkas are obvious. Yet all of these elements kaleidoscopically dance and blend in a joyous celebration of life and music. Polkas address the human condition with the message, "Have a good time. Forget your Troubles." That's why melody lines in traditional polkas may be perceived as simple and lyrics serendipitous. The deeper message, however, is that survival is possible with a vigilant focus on the light. The glass is half full. It's okay to hang loose and get silly. What's more, it's encouraged. The essence of polka music is far from the safe and tame. In fact, Carl Finch of Brave Combo says, "You and I both know that polka music comes from a wild place in the Heart."

Over the past forty years and approximately 160 dates per year, this Grammy award-winning group is known for its modern blend of polka originals, covers and standards that have pleased people in over 6000 appearances, touring the USA, Canada, France, Austria, Mexico, and Poland. They have recorded over 55 albums and received over 125 miscellaneous awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the International Polka Association, the United States Polka Association, the United Polka Boosters and the United Polka Association. Eddie Blazonczyk Sr. was born in Chicago in 1941, the son of immigrants from the rural Tatra Mountain region of southern Poland. His mother directed and sang in a Gorale (Mountaineer), music and dance ensemble in which he participated as a child. His father performed in a Gorale band on the cello. As a young boy, Eddie was exposed to some of the most influential polka musicians of the day such as Lil' Wally, Steve Adamczyk, Eddie Zima, Marion Lush and America's Polka King Frank Yankovic. The Versatones career highlights include Eddie Blazonczyk Sr's National Heritage Fellowship induction, the country's most prestigious honor in the folk and traditional arts, presented by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1998, Eddie Blazonczyk Sr's election into the I.P.A. Polka Music Hall of Fame in 1970 and in 1986 the Versatones received a Grammy for their "Another Polka Celebration" album. They have also been nominated for a Grammy 14 times by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science since the polka bracket first spun off from the folk category in 1985. In 1967, a Congressional Committee awarded the title "The Nations #1 Polka Band" to Eddie Blazonczyk's Versatones and registered this title with the Library of Congress.

National Polka Alert System
Purpose
The Polka Nation requires a National Polka Alert System to provide a comprehensive and effective means to disseminate information regarding the risk of listening and dancing to polka music to Federal, State, and Local authorities and to the American people. Such a system would provide warnings in the form of a set of graduated "Polka Conditions" that would increase as the risk of the conditions increases. At each Polka Condition, Federal departments and agencies would implement a corresponding set of "Proactive Polka Measures" to further increase vulnerability or increase response capability during a period of heightened polka alert. This system is intended to create a common vocabulary, context, and structure for an ongoing national discussion about the nature of the polka that may embrace the polkaland and the appropriate measures that should be taken in response. It seeks to inform and facilitate decisions appropriate to different levels of government, and to polkateers at home and at work.

Music
Polka Time
Fritz's Polka Band urges "Give Polka Music a Chance"
By Russ Tarby
Fritz Scherz looks forward to playing polka music long into the 21st century. Like most 26-year-olds, the accomplished accordionist from Verona peppers his speech with terms such as "cool" and "awesome." He recently named his publishing company Fritzfraniac Music, a sobriquet more suggestive of maniacal rock than of oompah polka. And like many rock stars, when things get hot on stageas they did when Fritz's Polka Band played with Canadian Polka King Walt Ostanek at the Bill Flynn Polka Weekend in Ellenville, Pa., in 1994Scherz just shed his shirt and played his big accordion bare-chested. At 26, Fritz Scherz has already been performing the simple yet snappy music for 20 years, 18 of them as a professional. That's right, he got started when he was only 8. It's a family tradition. His dad, Fred Scherz Sr., traces his accordion-playing days back to 1945, when he was just 15. When Fritz was a kid, his dad ran a farm. "When he came in from the barn at night, dad would play his accordion," the younger Scherz recalls. "My mother and I used to listen to him play, and I really liked the instrument." In 1978, when he was 8, his dad made Fritz a full-time member of his polka band, and even named the group after the kid, looking forward to the day when Fritz would carry on the tradition. Father and son continue in that partnership, as they complement each other's accordion style: Fred handles most of the chording, bellows shakes and tremolo effects, while Fritz does most of the single-note lead work. They both play big black Excelsior brand accordions. "They're the sweetest sound in polka music," Fritz attests. In 1989, Fritz took top honors at the National Accordion Contest in Gibbon, Minn.
