James K. Polk
James was born in North Carolina. He was a workaholic who worked long, long hours. Polk owned slaves. Polk was one of only three Presidents that didn't have any children. Polk was the most successful president in American history. During the 1844 campaign, he made 5 promises: to acquire California from Mexico, to settle the Oregon dispute, to lower the tariff, to establish a sub-treasury, and to retire from the office after 4 years. When he left office, his campaign promises had all been fulfilled. He was the first "dark horse" (long shot) presidential nominee in U.S. history. Polk was the first president in office to have his photo taken (1849). The first gaslight was turned on in the White House during Polk's administration, December 29, 1848.
Polk had ruined his health from overwork while in office. He died of exhaustion only 3 months after his term ended. This page was last modified on Sunday, May 9, 2004 For information or corrections to the site contact:

I
'll try to put up some more from this book before long.) James K. Polk was president in an age that transformed the United States into a major continental power; he was commander-in-chief in a war that extended its boundaries to the Rio Grande, the Pacific, and the forty-ninth parallel. Yet Polk was little loved by his contemporaries and little noted by history.
"Tonight the president has his first levee. I had rather be whipped than go." The reasons lie in Polk's policies and personality. Polk's "Jacksonian economic agenda," says historian Sam W. Haynes, "which called for a low tariff, firm opposition to internal improvements, and a hard money doctrine, was one that many Democrats were beginning to find ill-suited to the demands of a sophisticated marketplace, and [this] had much to do with his unpopularity."
Not only "dogmatic in his political views," says Haynes, Polk was also "stiffly formal in his political relations … grim, humorless … provincial in outlook and tastes." "Seldom," observes historian Thomas Hietala, "had a president achieved so much so quickly; seldom had a president alienated so many men so completely." Hietala describes the puritanical Polk's advent on the Washington political scene: Polk dreaded social gathering, and in one of his first acts as president banished dancing from the white House. He maintained a strained cordiality during his ceremonial duties, but people were a distant second to politics in his affections. In early 1846, Senator [John] Fairfield [of Maine] admitted to his wife: "Tonight the president has his first levee. I had rather be whipped than go, but circumstances render it unavoidable. There will be no dancing and no refreshment of any kind"

Polk: Biography Learn about the 11th President, the youngest up to the time, who managed to expand the borders of the United States to the Pacific Ocean, added three states to the Union, started the Naval Academy, the Washington Monument, issued the first postage stamp, and remains the youngest President to die outside those who have been assassinated. The career of the eleventh U.S. President reflected and fulfilled the young nation's commitment to westward expansion. The son of a North Carolina farmer and surveyor, James Knox Polk was ten years old when his family moved across the Appalachian Mountains. Growing up on the Tennessee frontier, he inherited his neighbors' work ethic, resourcefulness, and democratic ideals. Although young James was accustomed to the rigors of frontier life, he lacked physical stamina. Shortly before his seventeenth birthday, he needed surgery for stones in his urinary bladder. The successful operation, performed by noted Kentucky surgeon Ephraim McDowell, enabled James to pursue an education with renewed enthusiasm.

Polk Ancestral Home in Columbia, Tennessee is the only surviving residence of the eleventh U.S. President (excluding the White House). Samuel Polk, a prosperous farmer and surveyor, built the Federal-style brick house in 1816 while his oldest son James was attending the University of North Carolina. When the future President graduated in 1818, he returned to Tennessee and stayed with his parents until his marriage to Sarah Childress in 1824. While living in his family's Columbia home, James practiced law and began his political career by successfully running for the State Legislature. Today, the Home displays original items from James K. Polk's years in Tennessee and Washington, D.C. including furniture, paintings, and White House china. In addition to touring the main Home, guests may visit the adjacent ca. 1820 Sisters' House where two of the President's married sisters lived at different times. The Sisters' House offers a 12-minute orientation video, a museum room, temporary exhibits, and a shop. The museum features some of the most unique and significant artifacts from the site's collections including daguerreotypes of President and Mrs. Polk, White House gifts and mementos, campaign memorabilia from the Election of 1844, and Sarah Polk's Inaugural fan with miniature portraits of the first eleven Presidents.

No president who performs his duties faithfully and conscientiously can have any leisure. The passion for office among members of Congress is very great, if not absolutely disreputable, and greatly embarrasses the operations of the Government. They create offices by their own votes and then seek to fill them themselves. Though I occupy a very high position, I am the hardest-working man in this country. When I observed a strong man approaching I generally took advantage of him by being a little quicker than he was and seizing him by the tip of the fingers, giving him a hearty shake, and thus preventing him from getting a full grip upon me.

    James Knox Polk 1795-1849
"There is more selfishness and less principle among members of Congress... than I had any conception of, before I became President of the U.S." Young Hickory , as President Polk was often called, spoke these words during the hardest years of his life. Born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on November 2, 1795, Polk was the 11th president of our nation from 1845-1949. He was the oldest of 10 children raised by Samual and Jane Knox Polk.
James Polk grew to be a studious and industrious worker. At age 17, he survived a gallstone operation without anethesia or antiseptics, which were not used at the time. He went on to graduate with honors in 1818 from the University of North Carolina and became friends with Andrew Jackson while serving in the Tennessee legislature. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1823-1825, a member of the House of Representatives from 1825-1839, speaker of the House of Representatives from 1835-1839, and Governor of Tennessee from 1839-1841.

    http://www.presidentialpetmuseum.com/presidents/11JP.htm
    President James Knox Polk
Served 1845-1849 James Knox Polk was born November 2, 1795, in Mecklenberg County, North Carolina, on his family's farm. As a boy, Polk dreamed of becoming President and worked hard to achieve his goal. After four years of Whig Party Presidents Harrison and Tyler, Polk ran under the Democratic Party banner in 1844 with George M. Dallas as his Vice President. After his election, he was known for his long and hard hours and for his strict religious beliefs. He and his wife, Sarah Childress, had no children. They did not allow drinking or dancing at the White House, not even in celebration of his inauguration. Polk's campaign slogan was "Fifty-Four Forty or Fight," demanding that Britain cede to the U.S. all territory of the Oregon Country south of latitude 54°40'N, as far north as Queen Charlotte Island and the Dixon Entrance, just south of what is now the southern end of Alaska. Once he became President, however, Polk compromised with Britain, settling the U.S. border with Canada at latitude 49°N and avoiding a war. Polk could not avoid a war with Mexico 1846-1848, however, after Mexican troops captured Alamo and the Republic of Texas pleaded for American intervention.

“James Polk was the eldest of ten children. He was sickly and therefore spared doing his share of farm chores. Although he had little formal education, he was studious and after graduating from the University of North Carolina he studied law. Politics proved more exciting than practicing law, and soon Polk was involved in state and then national politics. He was nominated at the Democratic Presidential Convention on the ninth ballot. He was the first ‘Dark Horse’ candidate to run and then win the presidency. During his tenure America had its largest growth. He guided the nation through the Mexican War and settled the Oregon boundary. He was able to complete the program he outlined during the campaign – something few presidents are able to do. He kept his campaign promise and did not seek a second term.” On Line Lesson Plans: James Polk from TeacherVision
