Just So We're Clear
Here's a nice comparison of Bush's Vietnam record and Kerry's. Two salient points:
  • Bush did everything he could to get out of serving in Vietnam; Kerry made a special request to serve there; Bush was AWOL and discharged without any honors or commendations; Kerry has a Bronze Star, a Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.
Remember how the Republicans made all that noise about Clinton's lack of service? Where are those two-faced humps now that they've managed to put a deserter in the White House? Remember this come November: Bush is a coward and a liar; Kerry is a man of integrity. Who you gonna vote for?

Church and State, Religion and Politics
Kenneth Cauthen
The essay that formerly was on this page was published as a part of a chapter of my The Ethics of Belief: A Bio-Historical Approach, 2 vols. (Lima, OH: CSS Publishing Co., 2001). A brief summary follows.
The question of religion and politics is not the same as the question of church and state. Failure to make this distinction results in confusion. The problem of church and state has to do with institutions and the spheres of action that are appropriate for each. Here the concept of separation is valid. Thorny problems arise in two particular areas. 1. The first involves trying to steer between avoiding an establishment of religion and permitting its free exercise. Prayer in public schools and is among the most contentious. 2. A second range of problems arises when religious belief and practice conflict with secular law. The problem of religion and politics defines another set of issues. Church and state deals with the relationship of institutions that are independent of each other. Religion and politics has to do with two spheres of activities in the life of the same persons. Citizens who belong to religious groups are also members of the secular society, and this dual association generates complications. Religious beliefs have moral and social implications, and it is appropriate for people of faith to express these through their activities as citizens in the political order. The fact that ethical convictions are rooted in religious faith does not disqualify them from the political realm. However, they do not have secular validity merely because they are thought by their exponents to be religiously authorized. They must be argued for in appropriate social and political terms in harmony with national values.

Advice and support are available to students both within and outwith SSPS. Messages can be passed to staff via the SSPS Undergraduate Office (Room 206) as well as via phone and by e-mail. Directors of Studies and other staff normally post 'office hours' for student consultation on their office doors. Where a member of staff advertises such office hours students should endeavour to respect them unless the nature of the problem prevents this.

"It's less than five months until Election Day, yet I still can't find even a dozen open House seats that could well change party control," political analyst Stuart Rothenberg writes in Roll Call.
"I'm not looking only for seats that are likely to change control, or even for those that are true toss-ups. No, I'm merely looking for districts with a one-in-three chance of switching control. And I still can't find a dozen districts that merit inclusion on the list," Mr. Rothenberg says.
"The small number of open seats that could flip in November continues to be a major problem for the Democrats, who insist that their party has some chance at a majority in the House this fall.
"Democrats may be able to knock off a handful of GOP incumbents, but they'll need to add a number of Republican open seats to their column to have any chance of talking about a Democratic-majority House."

I urge everyone to go here and write to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senator Jon Kyl has introduced a bill that would make the most damaging aspects of the Patriot Act permanent, even though they were set to expire at the end of 2005. It is important to take action and fight against this threat to our liberties.

I enthusiastically recommend the book “Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do”. It is an excellent book that talks about consensual crimes (such as drug use, prostitution, etc.) and the reasons for legalizing them. The central theme is that people should be able to do whatever they want with their person or property as long as they don’t physically harm the person or property of a non-consenting other.
